  1. Well soon to be that is. Hopefully driving 5 hours (one way) on Saturday to pick up what looks to be a very nice pair of 1973 Khorns. Not only is this my first time owning a pair, but it will be my first time even listening to a klipschorn. I've heard all the buzz, but it's still hard to know what to expect. They will be going on the short wall of a 15 X 26 ft dedicated room. Any and all advice on transport issues, placement or anything else klipschorn related is welcome in this thread. Shakey

  3. I'm so excited for you. I always enjoy reading the post that go; Should I or shouldn't I, I think I'm gonna do it, I can't wait this XXX day. All that is left is the report back post pick-up. I remember my same situation. I'll never own a pair, holly cow there is a pair close enough for me to drive, can you believe I own Khorns. It will be fun to hear your adventure there and back and initial impressions. Truth be told, you might be a tad disappointed at first. Your expectations are so high how could they possibly be matched? I'd never heard a pair till I went to buy mine. I was expecting world changing, earth shaking, audio heavens opening up, etc. I remember thinking my khorns are great, but not a world apart from my Forte IIs or Original Chorus. Just the other day I dragged my Forte IIs back in front of my Khorns in and was in love with the Khorns all over again. But I do remember the first few songs not feeling like it was a 180 degree difference/improvement and wondering about the point of diminishing returns. A couple of days in, hearing your old favorites for the "first time" will make it all worth it. I do predict you will love them. Based on your room picture in the other post I bet you will be surprised how "small" they actually become. You will probably have more usable space over the FIII/bass trap combo. You also look like you have some quality gear so good news there. The Khorns are not very forgiving. An iPod and AVR is not the way to feed those beasts. They can brutal on the garbage returned from garbage in. LOUD garbage, but garbage non the less. I'd suggest you not get too anxious about swapping XOs changing drivers/horns. Use them, get to know them, find out what you don't like if anything. Then, swap stuff out as you find it necessary not just for the sake of change.

  4. RIP Mr. Coffee, you were a loyal companion and trusted confidant. Please observe a moment of silence, then return to your regularly scheduled coffee drinking. Well, not you Chuck ;-)

  5. Sun burned through those tropical rain-clouds finally!! Doing inside stuff still too wet outside, New telephone poles and two transformers three streets down so maybe the power stays on all day today. Two legends here, half-speed mastered, easygoing vocals and emotional guitars.

  6. Wht kind of ceiling is in the room? We hung speakers from chain that ran up through the drop ceiling to the beams above. With two points on a side, a third chain allowed us to adjust the tilt downward. A drawing might be required to make it clear... Bruce

  8. Finally, the band director got back to me about the music system for the band room. She “blew up” the cheesy computer speakers in use now. The KP-201s and a Denon AVR with Bluetooth and a remote will fill the bill. A huge TV can connect to the AVR by HDMI. I meet with her and the building engineer on Thursday. I don’t see a way around attaching these to cinder block ~ 8’ up and ~ 15’ a part and angled down toward the seated students. Although not ideal, it will fill the large space with loud and clear Klipsch low distortion high efficiency dynamic sound. Any experience with brackets capable of supporting 45#?

  10. My Mr. Coffee machine died today. It was able to make it through 2 cups but then died giving birth to cup number 3. I really can't guess how old it was but I did get my monies worth out of it. No services are planned at this time. A new machine was ordered from Amazon. Some of you may remember that I had a tooth implant about a year ago that was unsuccessful due to thermal necrosis (over heated bone). Went in to try again this morning. Doc says everything went perfect so we will see. Have to wait 6-8 weeks to get the rest of the job done. Nothing solid to eat for a few days and nothing hot or spicy. LF brought me a smoothie made from chocolate, bananas, and acai berries. Taking it easy and watching "b" grade movies on Amazon. Rain, rain, and more rain........

  12. Regarding: moving these. Bring along a crescent wrench and screw drivers. The cabinets are about 175 lbs each. Before anything, remove the fabric-covered wings (could be a nut or wing nut). Do not put any serious weight or pressure on the wings since they can break (you will not have been the first). Take a picture of the wiring from the network to the bass bin and remove as few wires as possible. Remove the top section. Now you are good to go. Yes, blankets and cardboard are your friend. Good luck, -Tom EDIT: Hey, someone beat me to it ....

  13. Agree with most of that. I'd say $2K or less get them and don't look back. XOs will need attention sooner than later but not as if unlistenable in the short term. If all drivers are working and they look half way decent you *NEED* them. Asking us to talk you off the ledge is simply not going to happen with this group of enablers.

  14. ... and I saw a pair of Chorous I for $400 in Tucson. I am having to stop myself or I will end up with a houseful. I know how I am. When it come to some things, I fall into line with a lot of you/us. I have micro-helicopters from hell ... looking for "the one"... Exchanging parts and upgrading, modding. I finally got one I like, after building a custom. Cobbed from bits and pieces, plus some innovations. I went thru all the same stuff you/we do to speakers. Go thru all of the electronic perturbations coupled to the different mechanical variations. Down to how hard [or soft] the rubber dampers are. A lot was like here ... to the untrained eye/ear, no differences could be seen. My buddy brought me some coffee. I don't know what they told him, but, if it is sposed to be special, I have one word "Meh"

  16. As I recall, there might be a dropped acoustical tile ceiling. The ceiling is higher in the band room than the rest of the school, not counting the gymnasium. The chain idea could work. That’s how I suspended Bose 901s from the beams in my parents’ family room 44 years ago.

  17. I received the crossovers I bought from Veaux. Kinda fun to keep things in the "family". Looks like I'm the fourth member of the group to own them. They were well-packed, and delivered on time. A welcome upgrade to the stock AB's on my 84 Belles.

  20. So there are desert rednecks, good to know. The Forte lll's will not sound like your LaScalas, totally different overall sound. The LaScalas will have a much more pronounced midrange, and a little different bass, folded horn bass.

  21. RIP Dennis you are missed. Here is some additional info from a friend of his, Dennis Kleitsch dead at 63. Audio was Dennis' hobby, besides conspiracy theory, politics, and money. When young, he loved music, started selling speakers and stuff. (With 165 IQ and photographic memory, school was a bore and college was worse). His dad was super smart and held over 20 patents. Eventually was curious why some stuff sounded better than others. Learned electronics, then ran the repair center here. It was the largest jbl and klipsch distributer in the midwest at the time. Dennis worked at Rockwell-Collins for 20 years as a technician Not a lot to know about this very talented man thankfully he touched a lot of people.

  25. OK; thinking of building a box same size as Heresy's. Because ... ... just picked up a set of Heresy I's. ( @wvu80; for your records $400, condition almost 8/10, raw birch, one blown tweeter diaphragm - actually paid $200 and gave him some KG2.5's and 3.2's. ) Playing a piece of classical (Itzhak Perlman, Tchaikovsky's #1) and must say I am really IMPRESSED . Nice tonal quality and sound stage. Two hour trip to get them ... seller did not have any front teeth ... dusty/dirty cabinets, etc But think it was money well spend. Now; have to hide them from my wife before she get's back Friday ...no room in front of my KPT-904's Oh well; I'll meet her at the door with a glass of wine Cheers, Emile

  27. The Khorns will want to go in the corners. You might want to get some pool noodles to seal the bass bin to the wall. https://www.amazon.com/Honor-Traders-Noodles-Padding-Highest/dp/B01N4GDEKT/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1527713580&sr=8-8&keywords=pool+noodles+bulk+cheap

  30. Oh, if you like beer get the khorns loaded up and spend the night in Ashville, if you like big fireplaces and indoor swimming pools tour the Biltmore. I prefer all the beer joints. There is a beer tour in a large van with about 10-12 others you can hit several good breweries, have your own driver and sample till your heart is content. Lots of good food too. Coffee shop in a double decker British bus that is decent too. You can't miss it if walking around town. Great town!

  32. That's actually how I use them. I have one preamp with these on the outputs. One set of cables runs to my ATI amp for my patio. The other set of cables feeds a QSC AND Crown amp in my garage. I can use one amp, the other or both simultaneously. No noise, no hum, no issues whatsoever.

  33. Funny Roy talked about this at the pilgrimage demo of the Jubs. He stated it’s not the electrical parameters active or passive that define the acoustical crossover point which in the case of the Jub/K402/K691 is at 500Hz acoustically and has always been in both his active and passive setups for the Jubilee with K402. In other words the electrical parameters are chosen for the goal of 500Hz acoustical crossover point. Jubilee LF has a more consistent expansion and lower distortion over most of the frequency region that the Jubilee and KHorn are typically being used. The Jubilee with the PEQ at 32Hz also gives a noticeable improvement in that region over the KHorn. miketn

  37. It might be better to bolt the chain to the sides, it wouldn't be just hanging from the top that way ? Plus the chain idea would give backup if one point failed for any reason, 3 chains should work fine, one on each side and one to the bottom up the back to aim it down a little if needed ?

  38. I thought I would follow up now that I have made two batches and treated some albums. First we collected all the chemicals and labware needed to make this fun for my daughter and me to do some science. Second we pre-measured the ingredients. Then we cooked the distilled water and Elvanol / PVA for 35 minutes Once it was clear like Karo we added the other ingredients and let it cool Once cool we put it in push to close bottles and tried it out. So far we have cleaned 17 albums with some of them being ready for the garbage when we started. While I can't say the Goo as a miracle it is nothing short of amazing. All cleaned albums have be promoted back to being played on the good turntable. One of the albums I treated was from when I was 13 and not well kept, it is once again playable! I am really glad I did not throw my "unplayable" albums away. I can't wait to try it out on more albums as the results really are amazing, ELO is next - thanks @DizRotus !!!

  41. I still tear-up when see "R.I.P." next to "DJK" - although I never got to meet him in person, he was very kind and helpful on audio matters, witty, and when my income suddenly went to zero without warning late last year, offered me a place to stay if I got kicked all the way to the curb. (that would have been a burden and a half for anyone lol)

  42. Miles Davis: Sketches of Spain and Kind of Blue The Westminster Classical Sampler (mono, but one of the best balanced and most dynamic ever) No, the picture has nothing to do with it. Sonic Spectaculars, Crystal Clear records, direct to disk -- also on tapes made at same session. The Best Fanfare for the Common Man, which will flap your pants' legs and shake your room. All selections are great! Beethoven's 7th, Rene Leibowitz. Someone said the end sounds like a male orgasm (maybe female, also). The Times They Are A-changin' Harbinger of an age. Hopefully the Once and Future. " Please get out of the new one if you can't lend your hand ..."

  46. Got a chance to finally hook them up in the garage and test drivers... Tweeters were blown. Midrange was mushy/bleary as was the bass - I suspect crossover (original caps are surely not to spec) and failing diaphragms.. After several hours debating I decided to do the only logical thing. Order all new drivers from Mr. Crites and a set of his type "A/4500" crossovers... So I have the following on order: CT120 tweeters A55G midrange drivers CW1526C Cast woofers New midrange driver to horn gaskets I figured they deserve the royal treatment, plus I really want them back to 100% condition. I plan to resell the original components to recoup some of the cost of the updates.
