  1. I have to collect and send in sales tax now for Arkansas. It is an extreme pain to comply with all the sales tax laws in just Arkansas. There is the state sales tax, there are county sales taxes, there are city sales taxes. In a given county, your tax rate depends on where you live in that county and whether or not you are inside city limits or outside. And this tax is on where the product is delivered, not where I am. I get letters almost every week updating sales taxes for several different cities and counties in Arkansas. I have so much difficulty keeping up with the Arkansas situation that I cannot imagine having to keep up with 50 different states and all their different tax laws and changes to those laws. And, for one small mistake on filing, the state can and will padlock the business and freeze all bank accounts unless you very quickly fix whatever they say you need to fix. They threatened me with that over $17.00 they said I owed. I disagree with owing them that, but just paid it.

  4. And another thing while I am in rant mode. They always talk about internet sales putting a lot of brick and mortar stores out of business. I can take you around this small town where I live and show you a bunch of those stores that started doing business on the internet and that saved them. More profitable than they ever were before. The internet let them go after a customer base many times larger than they had before the internet business.

  6. In a landmark decision in the case of Thebes vs. Thebes, the Supreme Court today, by a margin of 5 to 4, decided in favor of Thebes. When asked for his reaction Thebes was conflicted, stating he favored state sales taxes on internet sales, while at the same time arguing that he should be exempt, having developed the decisive logic used in the Supreme Court's trenchant decision. Thebes was last seen drinking champagne in his left hand while smacking himself upside the head with his right hand.

  7. Trivia: About the same distance as Texarkana to Chicago. I live in Texarkana, and lived in El Paso as well. Swamp cooler in El Paso at 115 feels better than AC in TXK at 95. Dave

  11. when I go to next year pilgrimage, I will be crossing TX the long/est way. or almost. ElPaso to Texarkana. I just took a splash in the kid's pool. She wanted me to fill it. Hard to say "No" to a little girl. The other teacher, at the wife's school, is moving to Prescott. Having a moving sale. Told wife to get the horse trough ... Enough room for a little boat motor and we have a "HillbillyHotTub". It would be a matched set with the outhouse converted to sauna. ...and my wife denies the "Hill folk" tag that I am proud of. Kinda figures.

  12. Here is a shot of my new headphone amp from Nobsound. It is a hybrid design, though I don't know exactly how they configure the tubes in this. Doesn't sound half bad either. https://www.amazon.com/Nobsound-NS-08E-Integrated-Amplifier-Headphone/dp/B014FASL1A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1529680111&sr=8-1&keywords=nobsound+ns-08e

  15. That's what struck me almost 40 years ago, when I was auditioning Polk, Magnepan, AR, JBL (L100), Yamaha and many more brands, it was the Klipschorns with center Belle along a longer wall in a glassed-in room that absolutely captivated my attention. That sound and listening experience never left my memory. It's not difficult to hear the difference. Having plenty of listening time with A-B comparison can help, but I personally found that the A-B comparison wasn't needed the moment the Khorns were turned on with a good recording playing. Nowadays, I think that many potential buyers are still looking for a stereo setup because that's what 99+% of the music sales and all viable streaming/download services are producing. By and large, people are still listening to stereo as the basic hi-fi format. Playing back movies in a multichannel system today is typically viewed differently (by most buyers). In my opinion however, simply adding a center (like the Belle used to do) and surround loudspeakers/subwoofers is the way to go...staying hi-fi all the way. With the Khorns/Belle, the only addition needed was surrounds and subs, and an AV processor/preamp. PWK was probably the earliest proponent of multichannel (by 35 years or more)...and he was right. 23. I have done that before, this time I thought I did but didn't have time to adjust in time. I think I have an old bag I could use to just take out the one camera when I am not in a rush for one picture, in a rush I need to check twice. That's me, I do this for fun, the reason I use a filter is because of just what you said, I am careful but at times when carrying a camera all day without it being the main focus of the day (not work) I had accidentally more than once went to grab the camera or move it after a pic and touched the glass by accident. I then have no problem wiping off the glass knowing no matter what it's only a filter. I am worried about causing a problem with any coating a lens may have and causing a problem that does require repair. Once I accidently slipped grabbed a railing and caught my balance but the camera swung and the lens hit part of another railing, it broke the filter but the lens was fine, even the filter unscrewed without a problem, I got lucky. Now this has only happened once in 40 years but it did happen a year ago. Never hit the ground but it has slipped over the years, it just depends on where i'm at, I carry it both ways. Many times in crowds if it's not hot I carry it on my shoulder under a light jacket and adjust the strap so it hangs under the jacket and you can not tell I have a camera, like Mardi Gras or late night in the Quarter. Many times in not so safe places or other countries I feel like I can somewhat conceal it a little more carried on my shoulder with my hand on the camera instead of around my neck. But it's probably all BS, if someone is looking at stealing a camera from someone they probably notice me as a target way before I notice them, unless it's hidden completely. Many of these things are just very old habits I got use to maby more than anything else. Since I do this for fun I don't think about it like a professional may, but good ideas are good ideas.

  24. I am actually using a tube preamp and a solid state amp. The amp has a current source and a voltage source, so I connect the LF to the voltage source and the HF to the current source, which simulates tubes. My highs are tube like while my lows are very controlled and thunderous, as one would expect from 300 watts of solid state amp. Great combo!!!

  25. Because we "old farts" have been around long enough to have found speakers we are satisfied with? The problem is getting the younger generation an opportunity to hear Heritage. I can't believe that many independent dealers are so cynical as to go by footprint to price ratio for all their speakers.. Maybe for the majority of the speakers that they carry, but not for the special ones. In the old days there were plenty of "footprint to price ratio" speakers in most stores -- AR, KLH, ADC, Dynaco, Sony, etc., etc., but dealers saved space for special products, like the cream of Klipsch, JBL, etc. People wandering into a glassed-in demo room would look at one of these monsters, and say, "What's that?" If these speakers were playing, they would drain the rest of the store of customers, as people crowded into the demo rooms and said "Wow!" People would send their friends, just so they would have the experience. Maybe they would buy nothing this year, or the next, or the next, but eventually buy one of the monsters, or buy a pair of small ones (Heresy?), then graduate to ones that take up a lot of floor space later. Customers can be loyal, if enticed. I stayed with one sales/music/engineering guy for 24 years, until we moved away. At our first meeting, nearly every combination of decent amps and speakers were compared, so far past closing time that both our girlfriends were worried about us. I wasn't rich, but didn't smoke, drink, etc. so I could buy so much: JBL horn loaded, Klipschorns, Heresy IIs, two Teac reel to reels, two Crown reel to reels, free standing Dolby and DBX, two Thorens turntables, SME arms, Ortofon cartridges, McIntosh preamp and two power amps, Luxman integrated, Lexicon cp1, etc., etc. My guy at the store built me a custom mixer from scratch. I recommended all that I was happy with, including many Klipsch models to everyone from the barber (until I gave up haircuts) to carpenters on two music room/HTs, to the physical therapist to many film students & psych students/faculty. I hauled Hersey IIs to work (SFSU) to demo them, and brought people home to hear Khorns. When we finally moved, I struck up a relationship with an equally cooperative sales/engineering guy, an ended up buying a Belle Klipsch, a Klipsch sub, two processors, two NAD power amps, etc. He consulted on my home theater, and he, too, built a custom component for me. My friends, starting in high school, all through college, grad school, and careers, did the same thing. They, too, heard the amazing demos.

  29. We average mid 90's but with high humidity. I do remember going through the Arizona desert in the summer as a kid, it was so hot you couldn't touch anything metal outside. Looked forward to the hotel pool but then the water was closer to a hot tub temperature, stayed in the room waiting to leave the next day. Got to see them filming the old TV show The Rat Patrol", it was the late 60's so we went on to California. My dad wanted to see some hippies so we went to Haight and Ashbury street for a walk, don't know why he was so interested in hippies, or maby it was the hippie girls ? Had my first Chinese food in Chinatown, my dad thought my mom was trying to kill us with that stuff, this was before there was a chinese restaurants everywhere. Things were different back then.

  31. And here I've put off the yard work all week because of five days of a hundred all over this side of town. NWS for us is over 100 miles away @ GSP airport while the metro area here has been over 1 mil since the 1980 census. I use weatherunderground stations around here and they match our non-mercury thermometer more often than not. It's 10:15 here and not 90 yet the little wave has broke, it's been 90 by 8:30a all week. About to finish off my birthday beans, this year I didn't have to pay for my yearly Kona this time, it was on the porch two weeks ago from my brother! Just <$45/lb is more than twice as much as I normally spend for my fix, but this is very good 3/4 dark with 1/4 med roasted and perfect with a smidgen of dk brown sugar.

  35. Both. German height climber zeppelins in WWI reached over 20,000 feet and many crew members lost consciousness and froze to death as they had no oxygen masks and their suits weren't all that effective given the time they had to spend on the runs at 70 mph or so. B-17 crews in WWII had oxygen masks and good suits, but still suffered at the service altitude of 30,000 feet. Dave

  36. They aren't "flaps"...but a diffusion device for the tweeter horn lens mouth, so that the high frequencies are not so much "in your face". JBL used them on many of their HF horns in their speakers, ever since the 1950's.
