  1. My wife and I like to do puzzles in our dining room (Great activity to spend a lot of time together talking). I was getting sick of having the music in the other room so here is where we wound up. I need to mount the speakers on the wall up higher when I finish out the trim in the room. Anyone know of some decent shelves? I may need to fabricate something. All Craigslist buys. I picked up the Denon 3805 and DVD 2910 knowing that they would become useful some day. Two years later and here you go . After getting the B&Ws I searched for a cabinet. I got the stand on Craigslist for $30, but it was really tall. I took it apart, cut the legs on a table saw, re-drilled the holes to move the drawer and shelves (that took a while) and here you go. It looks a lot better at 34" tall. I bought the power strip from a recommendation on here about 10 or 15 years ago.

  2. This is a brilliant compilation record of a band that pioneered a special sound A mind meld of some unique talent of 3 amazing musicians that was to much to hold together as they disbanded after 3 years, producing 4 albums But the music output left behind is immortal This LP is from 1983 and I just love listening to just about every song track especially Crossroads Not sure if I have posted this before - but it deserves another spin Artist - Cream Title - Strange Brew - The Very Best Of Cream

  5. That's the last of the 2nd (9am) coffee today. @Tarheel appreciate you flexibility allowing me to add new C's occasionally. Gotta root for the guys up in Raleigh! Overcast here today, it was 88 outside our kitchen window yesterday. That sunshine felt great as I cut the overseeded lawn for the first time in two weeks with that ten days of rain. It's coming up nicely.

  6. Welcome dlee, $300-$1000 based on their condition. To get a more accurate value please post pictures of the speakers. Front, with and without grills, sides, tops and rears. If they have riser bases their condition would also be helpful. Your location is also good in case there is an interested buyer here.

  7. I've got an "original" recording of Apollo 11 blasting off back in 1969. Dad took myself and the son of another friend of his down to watch it. Took a little hand-held portable cassette player with us and Dad played (the dramatic) TV interviewer a bit.... None the less, some idiot (that would be me!) turned it on during lift-off and don't you know.... it picked up the sound! Decades later, Dad called, said he was cleaning out some closets and sending me some stuff.....that was in there. Knowing how old it was, I didn't try anything with it.....I immediately sent it to someone (forget who) who was into tape restoration (or so he said) None the less.... sent it out and they copied it over to a CD so now, I have that recording in digital format....It's a WMA file If you can get past the giddy 9 year old who's making a fool of himself as 9 year olds might do (ahem, that would be me again).... it's pretty damn impressive to hear that thing take off. It will literally shake your room. Feel free to crank it up for me! I'm trying to upload it but, it's a 12 meg file.... I'm doubtful that it will work. I can email it perhaps (?) Oh, and if you can get past the gigging 9 year old, there is more on the tape..... a VERY exciting pool game... you can hear someone (ahem, probably me) hitting the cue-ball, it hits something else. Don't recall if you can hear the pockets or not (had ball return) and you hear some 9 year old chatter. Again, I don't recall what BUT, it will clearly put you to sleep. Clearly I was not very creative in my recording skills!! In the background??? You can hear my very first stereo playing! It's not blaring but it was a Yorx or something like that. Had some Superscope speakers that were 2-way. BUT, I went to Radio Shack and as an experiment, bought a midrange driver.....drilled a hole in the cabinet & screwed it in. I then went to that funny batch of wires inside it....took two of the wires (probably those going to the existing tweeter) and as I recall, snipped them and added this one in, over & above the existing. That was my attempt at converting this 2-way Superscope speaker into a 3-way....after all, MORE ways was better than fewer ways! The music playing in the background? as I recall, was In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Yeah, at 9 years old, I was already corrupted!! Looking like this file is going to take? I typed above while it was evidently uploading. Damn, looks like it worked??~!!!!! Apollo_11.wma

  8. I gave up cars years ago and do home improvement as a hobby. I made the table and matching side cart and inserts in the floors. I also cut every piece of marble myself on the floors and walls out of 3/4" slabs on a bride saw. I just need to fab some speakers mounts, finish the trim and this room is done.

  9. The more room you have, the more stuff you collect. I bought my house 5 years ago, with 2 barns and an attached 2 car garage. I have to park my truck outside!

  10. I'm rehabbing an Acoustic Research XA TT now and bought an ART phono stage for $50. The stage has a ton of good reviews and I felt it was a decent place to start. I didn't want to drop a ton of money out of the gate. Figured I'd start here and move up if I'm liking what I'm hearing. Just haven't got to the hearing part yet. Phono stage: https://www.amazon.com/ART-DJPREII-Audio-Turntable-Preamplifier/dp/B000AJR482/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=ART+Phono+stage&qid=1556202208&s=gateway&sr=8-3 Our own PMSummer uses an XA and he's a heavy vinyl guy. You can find one usually in the $250 - $350 range in decent condition. Pretty basic looking but highly revered and there are lots of customization's you can do to them. As an example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Acoustic-Research-AR-XA-Turntable-with-Dust-cover-Original-Box-With-Stanton-500/223490525936?hash=item340912caf0:g:QQYAAOSwyKlcrkTR Here's one that's been modded. Sold for $650. Just a thought.

  14. Many thanks to DizRotus - the LaScala's are now safe at home! The work has begun to clean them up after 42 years of use and neglect. Lots of love is going into them now - and glue, wood, new drivers, crossovers... Not sure how I will finish them in the end... likely I'll fix all the laminate issues and paint them for the time being. Possibly veneer down the road if I want to experiment.. From the model / serial number (LS-BR, 10R195) these are Raw Birch, from 1977.

  15. When going down this road, remember that you need a good quality phono stage and cartridge. If your budget is 1K for the table, add at least another grand to that. Shakey

  21. What's the point in debating over how the length of the Klipschorn bass horn is calculated? Do you think you know more about it than Chief Bonehead? The K-horn gets the job done, as it has for over 70 years. Suggesting that the top engineer, the person who comes up with the improvements to the classic design, may be doing something deceptive in the description of the horn is pretty rude. Saying you're not clear on how the measurement is arrived at would be one thing, and it seems to be exactly what's going on here, but to suggest that there may be "deceptive advertising" taking place makes it look like it might be a great idea to think things through before making accusations like that. The length of the bass horn is what it is. What would be the use of describing it incorrectly? It wouldn't change the performance of the horn or of the whole speaker. The K-horn's performance has improved over the decades, with minimal changes to the cabinet, other than the closed back. There has never been a change of roughly two feet in the bass horn length, so it's clear that you're not clear on how the length is measured.

  23. My experience: vinyl sounds better than streaming mp3 at 320kbps, even on a entry level turntable (check my signature for my setup). CDs and anything hi-rez will probably sound better than vinyl (taking dust and scratches into account), but nothing can beat the tactile experience of handling vinyl records, or the kick of finding an iconic record for $0.50 at a thrift store... There are obscenely crazy prices going around in Turntable Country, so use your common sense and think twice before you take out your wallet. Here is a good starting point for new turntable gear (reviews): https://www.analogplanet.com/category/turntable-reviews

  29. Here's the Hornresp Model Response of my new Super Tapped Horn. Measurements will follow as soon as it's built. It's 6 ft tall, 2 1/2 ft. wide and 17 inches deep. It can easily reach 125+ Decibels. Plot shown is for 1 Watt and a 2nd order Butterworth Low Pass Active Filter. With Cabin gain in a small living room, the low end should be up about 10 db more below 30 Hz. where things shake off the walls!!

  32. Were there any changes in the mass-loading (fender washers?) of the drone cone between II & III? Seems more important than the flavor of the dust cap. Moving mass determines system tuning. Did Midwest duplicate the original moving mass when they performed the recone? They are very conscientious about their work - I'm a customer since 1977.

  33. Trust me I feel your pain. Finished my Stihl collection today w/a nice pair of gas hedge trimmers. Spent the afternoon knockin the bushes down and cleaning up the mess. One end of the house done! Other end in a day or two. Trim one of those monsters then take a break and work on a Heineken. Garage stereo was cranked and the neighbors out walkin the oval I live in just waved and laffed at me watching them trim themselves. lololol Paying for it now though! Ugh!

  38. One of the biggest things I have learned (and this may pertain to everything). Keep it simple. I used to really over complicate BBQ, Grilling, Etc. If I do now, its for fun. My buddy takes cooking classes all over the country just to perfect a dish. For instance, he went down to New Orleans just to learn to make chocolate looking rouge for gumbo. I wish I had his time and money.

  40. Hate it for you Bill. Had the experience of things being awful to worse for four years, to the point of finality. Be nice to your filter... it can hurt you. Hope for you that the improvements are great after this "phase" of recovery. That air cast sounds nice... a lot better than a frozen bag of corn or peas! Can you hear the track noise form where you live? North side of town here the noise travels about ten or so miles, that's thirty miles from here. The Z-Max strip I've heard from I-85 at 70mph driving through one Sat. morning. *Actually going up hwy 49 to Concord when I was a kid we could see our neighbors car in one field of tens of thousands...Hemi-Orange Superbirds stood out! Saw a race car fly out of there once, searching for who it was now. Daytona with the flat terrain especially at night the sound travels for miles and miles!

  42. Wait! The stars are realigning. Scheduled to meet @Escher tomorrow afternoon in Royal Oak to close a deal on the La Scalas. Now I just need to turn the electronics into cash.
    1 point
  43. The stars didn’t align for @Escher, so I now own these. As I told Escher, I’m not worried about getting back my “investment.” First I’ll clean the Crown amp and preamp to see what they can fetch on eBay. Then I’ll try to move the La Scalas to their next custodian. First I’ll try to find a buyer who wants them as they are to restore. Failing that, I might restore them as a summer project before selling them. “As is,” finds all drivers work and they sound OK, despite antique AA networks. Please don’t be shy about expressing an interest in the La Scalas or the electronics. I can always find other projects.

  45. OK, traditionally we don't comment on the pricing in the garage sale posts (except for the alerts section). If you want to question pricing, it is polite to do that in a PM. People can ask whatever they want. If you are interested, try to work something out. If you aren't interested, move along and don't detract from a potential sale. Do mods add value? It depends on who is buying. Again, a great comment for a PM. I would post them on Craigslist as well. You may get lowball offers, but who cares. It only take one buyer. Good luck with your sale.
