  1. I've always appreciated the engineering and audio/sonic wizardry as put out by the Klipsch and B&K Type AA x-overs in my La Scalas, if not so much the aesthetics. As the boards are normally mounted inside the cabs, appearance is not really an issue. But I recently got the urge to bring them up topside just for my own personal viewing enjoyment and decided a "makeover" was in order to give the x-over boards a bit more visual appeal. I acquired a pair of hand-made "cutting" boards, mounted the x-over elements in their most suitable locations, drilled the appropriate holes, and finally made the wire connections mostly underneath to tidy up the looks. While I can't claim to be a craftsman compared to others of you on this Forum, I thought the project turned out pretty decent. Here are pics for your judgement - thanks for reading. Happy listening!

  6. Don´t have the earlier productions, discovered Fela and his son Femi in the early 1990´tees . He has an interesting biography Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti (born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti; 15 October 1938 – 2 August 1997), also known as Abami Eda, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, composer, political activist, and Pan-Africanist. He is regarded as the pioneer of Afrobeat, an African music genre that combines traditional Yoruba percussion and vocal styles with American funk and jazz. At the height of his popularity, he was referred to as one of Africa's most "challenging and charismatic music performers". described him as a musical and sociopolitical voice of international significance. Kuti was the son of a Nigerian women's rights activist, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. After early experiences abroad, he and his band Africa 70 (featuring drummer Tony Allen) shot to stardom in Nigeria during the 1970s, during which he was an outspoken critic and target of Nigeria's military juntas.[4] In 1970, he founded the Kalakuta Republic commune, which declared itself independent from military rule. The commune was destroyed in a 1978 raid. He was jailed by the government of Muhammadu Buhari in 1984, but released after 20 months. He continued to record and perform through the 1980s and 1990s. Since his death in 1997, reissues and compilations of his music have been overseen by his son, Femi Kuti.

  9. On to this from Ray Wylie Hubbard's March 18, 2022 release "Co-staring Too." lol Since I already had his "Co-Starring" lp I just had to get it. Right? 😂 In all, not a bad album if you like Ray Wylie Hubbard.

  10. Decided to toss this one on just to see how things worked with the addition of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. IF you pick it up ya don't need a sub! Just a touch maybe. I killed mine completely for this first listen. Glad I did too because it shines w/o one imo. Alan Parson's "One Note Symphony" is a 3-lp album is great way to look at them from a different perspective. The orchestra was a great addition to so many of his works all onto three 180 gram discs.

  11. Hi, I have just recaptured my 1996 Cary SLI50, the chemical capacitors are about 27 years old (1995 marking) so it was time to change them: 1 x 2200µF 25v, 2 x 47µF 350V and 2 x 1200µF 450v. For the little ones I bought here in France some 105°C and for the big ones I bought from Mouser at your place in the suburbs of Dallas some superb VISHAY BC blue, to replace the old NIPPON CHEMI CON. The amp now works wonderfully, the sound is more defined, when turned on, after 3 minutes of heating, the 5U4G/5C3S rectifiers are less stressed. Room for photos

  15. Hi Angelaudio, I just purchased a pair of Monos 45. Alan Eaton told me that this monos produce 2 wpc. Yes, I saw youtube mention 3wpc, but I'm more with Alan himself - Mate with my Heresy IV and they're a match made in heaven. On Hersy IV, it beats all other tube amps I currently have: Cary CAD-805 monos (50wpc), ARS Sonum (30wpc), TAD-60 with SET bias (10wpc), Atma-Sphere MA-1 OTL monos (100wpc). This monos 45 has zero volume at 12 o'clock position and max at 10 o'clock. I'm listening at 4 o'clock with satisfy sound level Very happy with my finding on this product - was on 1.5 year waiting list Decware SE84UFO2, cancelled it and jump on this 45 tube type

  16. The Carver should be fine (nice phono section too)...if you want to restore/mod it, these guys are good (see Bill D mod): https://nelionaudio.com/index.php?/services.html/ FYI, I have had excellent results with the Crown D-75A amps on Klipsch Heritage models and Heresys. Almost indestructible and very reasonable used pricing.

  17. I’ve ran a center Heresy on its side for ages, it sounds fine. It does tend to agitate the purists, dispersion & what-not, but to my aging ears it sounds about the same as vertical. That being said I have wondered if it would be possible build a Horizontal Heresy, oriented like the old horizontal Cornwalls.

  18. We first tried a spray lacquer that was recommended on one of the speakers. However, it wasn't bringing the true color of wood. So, we stripped it down again. Another recommendation was to use a tung oil vanish. Applied 4 coats with a light sanding in between.

  20. I was looking at my modern 2a3 tubes and not sure why I only just noticed they are all monoplates. The EH and sovteks are quite nice. I haven't compared to any RCA tubes. Not sure I've met a 2a3 I didn't like... I lie I have a fake Mullard labeled 2a3.

  21. I actually bought a pair of Mistral Integrated amps. They are rated at 35 WPC running EL-34's in ultra-linier. I bi-amped both amps and used an active crossover from a company named Rolls ($99 on Amazon). The amps were underwarranty and one day while I was listening I saw sparks, I emailed the seller, the seller told me to buy a soldier gun and fix Yeah the preamp never crossed my mind. IDK I just don't think the Parasound's are a good fit. I bought them because they were on sale (same with the Heresey's). After reading some reviews; a lot of people have said that the Parasound's do well with Definitive Technology and B&W. Back in the day (1997ish) I had a pair of Klipsch KLF-10's with a Kenwood integrated amp that I inherieted from my parents after they decided to get a smaller system. It sounded really good, but the Kenwood did not go below 40 Hz. My buddy had a Pioneer receiver and we hooked them to my old Klipsch's and the Pioneer did sound noticeably better going down lower than 40 Hz. Also, I had a buddy that had a Sony Receiver and this Sony sounded AMAZING!! LOL I was living at my parents place when we were messing around with the Sony so I only cranked it for a minute. We played the Pioneer/Klipsch at a wedding reception so we cranked it. I had many people say "those are killer speakers" referring to the KLF 10's I think the moral of my story is not to just but equipment because it's on sale. But I say I am older and have a little more money to put towards this hobby; so its all good!!

  25. Tossin the entire Alan Parson's "One Note Symphony out there if ya want to preview their new lp. Commented on it over in vinyl record spinning so tossed the entire thing down here. It's really time for him to get back to work imo. It's a great lp w/his hits on it but... Time to get back to work! Cool video though!

  26. I've been plenty happy with La Scala's and my Marantz SR-8015 for both movies and music. I previously had a Marantz NR-1605 and two Outlaw 2200's. Both sound great. I was on a mission to declutter, so I bought a flagship receiver and have a lot less clutter, cables, and outlets. The receiver uses more power than my previous setup, including the Emotiva 12v trigger I needed to turn on both Outlaw amps, AND the BASH 300 I used to power my subwoofer (I have an SVS-PC13 now and is plugged into the wall where it sits).

  28. I used La Scalas II mains in a 5.1 set up that included a Cornwall main and Heresy II's as sides/rears. I used them equally as a 5.1 Music and 5.1 home Theater set up with a AVR (Pioneer SC85) front end with GREAT success and listening reward. The set up sounded awesome but I did use the preouts for the front stage and let the AVR power the rears. an MODERN avr works good... but it is not the pinnacle of sound quality, though it is pretty darn good. Starting with an AVR will allow you to implement in stages as oppose to putting out the total cost up front...

  36. Break in is complete on the Crites' A X/O's. They sound quite excellent, and the combination of the LS's with either the MC225 or MC30's is outrageously great. Every owner of these speakers should have a chance at some point to hear them with these amps. I'm sure there are many other great combo's, but I'm good with what I have.

  38. I guess it depends on whether you want to stay with solid state or try tubes with them. On the tube side, I would highly recommend a RESTORED Fisher 500C, or a RESTORED Scott integrated like an LK-72 or 299B/C. They all sound great with H3s.

  39. My 2 cents. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. I listen to a lot of life music without amplification, our youngest daughter, 21, has been playing the violin since she was 5. She has practiced at home for many years. She has a beautiful instrument and a well intonated sound in her fingers. Unlike most "hi-fi" speakers, the LaScala realizes much more characteristics of sound with greater authenticity when I record my daughter's playing. Most people who know violins only from recordings through hi-fi speakers with this soft sound are shocked when they hear how much expression and dynamics a violin has...how loud it can be and how much expressive harshness is possible as well as a nice warm melting tone. Most people only know the warm melting sound, but a violin can be very aggressive and expressive at the appropriate point in the piece of music, to the point of intended pain in the ear. The Lascala reproduces all these characteristics very originally. And yes, I have the original K77 Alnico, but also a Jubilee. Nevertheless, the point of the OP is also relevant for me. Violin or string quartet sounds just very wonderful round, coherent and with a lot of richness of colors of the wood with my Stirling Broadcast LS3/6 BBC type speakers. The sound gets an additional component that I would call spatial emotionality. The wood of the violin breathes and it is with a real quickness, hence the thin-wall philosophy, with bitumen panels inside, of the BBC from which Harbeth also is a later follow up company like SB, Graham Audio or Spendor just to name some of those who are existing still today. (BTW if one has only been used to listen to „conventional“ speakers, be prepared if you listen to BBC design which are not really „conventional“ in conception even if they look so. I also have a 1993 Tannoy Canterbury Alnico, so not a bad guy in the line up from Tannoy, but for strings the Stirling Broadcast is just in another league. I won't say that's because the Tannoy also has a tweeter horn, but in that respect it's closer to the Klipsch. I also have old Quad ESL 57 electrostats, they are wonderful for violin...but not for reproducing the vivid vibrations and timbres of the wood...they are better for the delicate reproduction of the violin's strings. Well, the SB LS3/6 has comparable dispersion characteristics to the Lascala, so that can't account for the difference. I believe as a personal guess it is related to what types of sound production of nature is reproduced by which loudspeaker principle. Voices and wind instruments, for example, are produced with the help of compression. Both sound shockingly good over Lascala or KHorn. A string is not a sound produced by compression. It has a generation component like the fingernail in classical guitar or the felt hammer in piano. Or even the bowing, which is sometimes part of the sound modulation as in the violin. And unique to the violin is the permanent sound excitation of the string compared to guitar or piano. Perhaps it is the case that an albeit good horn shifts the proportions of the components of the sound somewhat towards those of the sound production and at the same time somewhat underrepresents the component of the violin's resonating body. At least, its vivid richness of timbre to my ears is best realized in the BBC cabinet designs, which paradoxically are among the "deadest" cabinets because they dissipate unwanted vibrations the fastest due to the thin wall and bitumen panel technology.

  47. Not much... I can really hear clean, low bass, though. I have yet to get a umik to get the response in room, but they actually sound great at the lower levels at which I listen. I know that sounds good Bruce, to me I love the MWM with a LaScala top. I probably listen to this combination more than others here, mostly because they are are where I spend the most time when working. I have never heard a full stack but I could imagine. Sorry for the tool in the way, and the dust which affects nothing.

  49. There's no secret. Your rate might be higher than mine, but I currently bill at $250. At 40 hours a week, this would be $500,000 annually. I don't make nearly that kind of dough. Never did. 4 hours a day is $250k - a very good living (in my mind). 3 hours a day is $187,500 (still very good in my mind). You get the idea. If a lawyer needs or wants to earn $500k, then, I can see why there might be time management issues. If a lawyer is making half that or less while putting in a long week, he might be giving away too much time by doing work and not billing for it (maybe research, for example). I bill for almost all my time. It's very manageable. It works even better now that I practice from home, rather than using part of my day to drive to and from an office. I have almost $0 overhead. Everything I earn goes to moi. I work any time I feel like it. Often, it includes weekends and evenings. I spread it out over 7 days. 15 hours a week over 7 days is barely 2 hours a day. One of the important things in my opinion is also not to procrastinate. When I get an assignment, I do it. I don't put it off. For example, a client asked me by email last night to prepare a deed. I did it first thing this morning. I stay away from family law. Family law can be a sure path to doing a lot of free work.
