  4. Matthews, why don't you hold off and come to our tube gathering in November in St. Louis. We will have about twenty people to bend your ear, about a third of them have extra tube amps to sell, and three or four will be featured at the house. Talk to the owners, listen to a variety of amps on Klipsch, Altec, and other speakers, and see what you like. It is a lot easier talking face to face than posting on the web, where you may or may not convince yourself the right path for your needs. Come hold thirty amps. www.audiocircle.com/index.php?board=70 tube amp small balls gathering Nov 7 and 8 here is one wall...

  6. To my little family! I am proud to present Samantha Mae! Born 10/21/15 at 1:57pm 6lbs 11oz. We were about to head to the hospital, and while my wife was taking a shower to get ready, she yelled my name and said the baby was coming. A few pushes later this little bundle was born...... in our bathroom Fun story to tell when she's older.

  7. Got to see and hear these beauties first hand. They look wonderful and the sound is equally impressive. Never heard the Chorus before and was very impressed. Matt is not exaggerating when he describes the bass. It really hits hard and quick without being boomy.

  10. Morning gang, getting ready to head down to the lake for one last time, last night for camping. 2" lift kit done, radiator done, right front wheel bearing done, left front ujoint done. Lift kit did exactly what I wanted it to do, level the Jeep out. It came with an add a leaf for the rear, but I decided against installing since the jeep wouldn't sit level. I need to have the ball joints done, but I will take it to a shop for that its just one job I don't feel like doing on the garage floor. Be careful, have a good time. Bye Bye have a wonderful time everybody.

  13. Hello, I've been hearing a lot about tubes and how good they work with klipsch speakers. If something wouldn't mind explaining what is a tube amp and how does it work compared to an AV receiver(which I have now) powering my kg4's. I'm really interesting in knowing so I can buy something good and know how it works. I'm pretty clueless honestly. Can I use for home theater?

  15. Congrats Dave on 20k. For me, the top 4 reasons are. Collective audio wisdom; General civility; Willingness to help; and Active membership. In my experience, no other audio forum can touch this one for great members who reply quickly with useful advice. On other forums, one could wait days or weeks for a reply that is merely rude and/or ignorant.

  17. Great news indeed! I dispatched The Twins to his bedside. There was some delay in getting Tawny's nurse's uniform right. Something about a crooked seem on the white hose. Tickles got it fixed. They slipped into their 1970's era PanAm stew uniforms for the flight and should be bringing good cheer and tender care to Maron anon.

  22. These are a pair of Eric Mandeville built JFL Horus inspired SET amps with a 5AR4/5687/2A3 tube palate. They are one of the most articulate and well balanced of the flock, and you will get to hear them early in the festivities. Along with the Welborne DRDs, the Opera Consonance 211s, the Yamamoto AO8, and the WE 91A, they reside at the top end of the SET amps we will have for sampling. And you won't be buying that single ended KT88 amp....poor build, poor iron, poor quality, and poor topology don't make a good amp, even when it is cheap, cheap. Your puppy won't let it in the house, even slathered with bacon grease! Willie will have his DHT 26-26 DC 45 featured at the gathering for $600, and he has a thread on it at the Gateway forum. I think we will have it up first on Saturday on the Altec Model 19s or RF7s. A word of warning - Willie and Mark love to talk about builds, and they will regale you for hours about tubes. They are as passionate about tube gear as anyone I have ever met, and they walk the walk.

  23. Welcome to the forum. I would expect that the woofers in your very badly used RF3 may questionable as far as the condition of the VC goes just because they work does not mean that they are fine. Given the description of the overall condition of these speakers I don't think I would have taken them for free. That said I don't need make work projects and you may well be interested in the work to learn. I would suggest that you part the speakers out sell each and every part, cabinet grills xover cups feet woofers. You may be able to recoup your investment. If you really want to keep the woofers you could mate them up with a larger horn better horn/driver along with a new crossover, a larger cabinet will let you get some additional bass extension and a larger horn will result in the ability to cross lower while improving upon the horns polar control. A horn like the HP64 is a good one inexpensive precision throat geometry and fits an EV DH1506 perfectly. The square mouth permits easy polar pattern switching. Some 25 - 30 PPI open cell foam in the throat up to the diffraction slot makes them sound better cost very little see link. EV DH1506 can be found used for very reasonable price they are monster drivers true pro quality build and hifi quality sound. They can be found used regularly and they have excellent aluminum diaphragm one piece dome/former with polyimide surround very well made you will want to make a hangar for them as they are very heavy. Hope this may be of some interest have fun with your project what ever it is. http://reconingspeakers.com/product/electro-voice-hp64m-horn-lens/

  24. Well, you missed the Welborne DRD300Bs, the Shuguang LX10, the United Electric ST70, and a flock of seagulls on the other wall. I'll stick your name on the monoblocs. :-) At $600, there probably will be 6 to 10 amps. If you don't have a preamp, there should be three to five integrated amps. You can bypass the pre IF you have a two mV output cd player with a variable loudness remote, but you have to be anal about turning the volume down. We are an easy two hour cruise from BoCoMo. Dave

  26. Maynard has a mono block sets he's building, costs about $300.00 to build them. I'm waiting to see if he's going to sell them and make others after he is done. Maybe look up some of the posts in the tube section for info. Check out the tube gathering listen to some things, and make a decision. I am going to an auction next week that has a bunch of tube stuff. Most will probably need rebuilding, but the stuff there is going to be phenomenal so I may get something and have it rebuilt.

  30. with power, you'll lose out on the triode mode for the range you're looking, there will be a slight difference in SQ but not to the point you'll regret doing tubes. I'm still learning, and I have both a push pull and a class a set. The set will give you the triode mode with less power, but again, don't be scared of the volume you'll get with it. Unless you really want to drown out people in the room it will work fine, most likely better than fine. The push pull will give more power for loudness, but won't give you the 3D almost in the room with you sound stage that triodes do. But it is definitely a step above SS as you'll have more crisp and clear mids and highs and with the speakers get a nice thump with bass. If you are up for trying out a SET Class A amp-look at this one as a starter . http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nobsound-EL34-Single-ended-Class-A-Stereo-Tube-Amplifier-Rectifier-HIFI-AMP-/281312152025?hash=item417f82c9d9:g:rzEAAOSwHjNV7q9w It comes with a 1 year warranty and is identical to the one I bought. It sounds very good and powers the forte's fine. http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAQIN-MC-10T-GD-10L-EL34-x4-Vacuum-Tube-Push-Pull-Integrated-Amplifier-110v-240v-/290708862955?hash=item43af9937eb:g:-CEAAOSwGWNUW4ia This is a push pull with a lot more pop on power and has nice sound to it and is pretty cheap also. I have no issues with it and it has my 2 turntables, computer, and cd player all hooked up and ready to go. Both can be used with multiple tubes.

  33. Neither of these aspect ratios is new, they are just uncommon. I love 2.20:1. That was the aspect ratio of 70 mm Todd-AO, and was used in Around the World in 80 Days (1956 version; the good one), Oklahoma!, South Pacific, Porgy and Bess, and a host of others, including the modestly titled The Miracle of Todd-AO. It was also used in Panavision 70, later renamed Super Panivision 70 (not Ultra Panavision 70), which was used in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Lawrence of Arabia among others. It was also used in the giant screen Dimension 150 (D150) used in Patton and The Bible ... in the beginning. In the theaters, this was a very immersive AR, particularly when they used a curved screen. For 80 Days, Lawrence and Space Odyssey the effect was positively hypnotic. These ARs were meant for very large screens, seen fairly close up. Under those circumstances, an advantage of 2.20:1 is that your eyes don't have to scan quite as far back and forth, compared to with 2.35/2.39("2.40"). On any screen, it is is easier to show height than it might be with the more elongated ARs. Unfortunately, in the 35 mm print downs, they tended to use 2.35:1, compromising the original composition. For this, and other reasons, it is better to try to see these films in a 70 mm theater, using a 70 mm print. If you decide to run any of these films in your HT, be sure to sit close, and be aware that Patton exists in two Blu-ray versions, one misguidedly softened -- and idiotic mistake -- and one very detailed. 80 Days isn't even available in Blu-ray yet. The DVD is O.K., but just O.K.. Space Odyssey was beautifully restored -- visually -- in Blu-ray, but something happened to the sound (especially during the signature theme, Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra, unfortunately) so it isn't quite as impressive as it used to be. 2.00:1 was used at least once in the past, on the insistence of the director of cinematography. That was for Apocalypse Now. The Blu-ray version was transformed into a more conventional AR, 2.39, I think . Too bad. That probably caused the image to be cut off a bit on the top and bottom. I have counted 10 different ARs.

  35. I gave Mr. Teaman a "like" for his timely editing of his Post no. 2. I also saw the original un-edited Post no. 2, and Mr. Teaman you know I like you, but yeah, it was thread crapping. I also know you had no malice in your heart. (I post this respectfully, with a smile on my face, and in an analytical way and not a critical way.) Mr. Plissken 99, glwys. You are selling some nice amps that need good homes.

  36. I was in the store yesterday when a young guy and his wife were picking up those poorly laminated grille-less Heresy's and a small vintage receiver. He was very knowledgable, reads this forum and has big refinishing plans for the speakers. It was great to see. It's one of the great things about having a vintage dealer in the area.

  37. If you want to take a small step first get yourself a good tube preamplifier or a tube buffer. Not really the same as a tube amplifier but you will have some idea of what the tube sound is about. I definitely prefer a tube preamp with SS amps with Klipsch speakers. I also have a tube amplifier that I do enjoy also. There is a difference in sound. Both sound equally good but different. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jolida-JD102CRC-tube-amplifier-DEMO-/262064554174?hash=item3d0443c0be:g:vqUAAOSwa39UrJO Actually that Jolida is a nice integrated for the price. The small step of using a tube buffer will be nice but not indicative of a tube amplifier though will tell you a little about the smoothing many tube amp lovers like. A tube amp typically - has a complex interaction with the speaker which will make matching a key to get the desired target response and drive. - does not punch like a GOOD solid state (lower impedance drive nor have the dampening) unless you pay big bucks - will usually be noisier than a solid state amp Tubes will usually provide a more relaxed and musical representation, less analytical. My 2 cents at least. Edited to clarify I wasn't talking about the original amp reference.

  39. For me it's about the information........and the proof of performance. The "I know exactly what I am getting". That means a lot to me. I can get past the rudeness. There is rarely any solid information like this brought forward from experts on this forum anymore. So I am enjoying this thread. I'd rather spend my time reading posts written by people that know what they are talking about........and that I know I can trust.

  42. Either way, it's mind boggling. In fact, if we should prove to be alone it's far more incredible than finding the incredible numbers of civilizations that have come, gone, and transcended to levels we can't even comprehend that science says MUST be there. If we are alone, then we are Special. I don't think that is supported by available science. Intelligence developing in a place like Europa would only be like us in science. I'd suspect their music would be pretty hard to imagine. In fact, my imagination simply stalls trying to imagine an aquatic civilization. A methane atmosphere one is just as strange. Further, it would appear that most civilizations predating us by any significant amount of time would have, if they survived, evolved to a state of pure energy. Dave

  43. I was a little thrown off by Jurrasic World when I loaded it up. It was an easy enough adjustment ,however, any new movie that's not 2.4:1 kind of disappoints me a little becuase it's so damn awesome in 2.4:1. Currently running a CIH 120" setup with a JVC RS4810.

  45. I restored some former bar beater La Scalas for use in a high school band practice room. I bought aluminum angle pieces at Home Depot and mitered them by hand. That was mostly done to avoid having to recreate perfect corners. After screwing the aluminum in place, I removed it, buttered the corners with black RTV and then screwed everything back in place. After several years, not a rattle or single piece of loose trim. I look forward to the after photos.

  46. The R-115SW is nice for home theater. It seems to be tuned to the low to mid 20 hz range and it can really output some low LFE around those frequencies. In terms of bang for your buck (with simplicity in mind) on movies it would be hard to beat. I just didn't care for it on music. I felt like there was some ringing and coloration at high volumes, plus kick drums just were not tight. I suppose what I was comparing it to didn't make it a fair fight, but still.
