  1. Some obligatory pics... Yes, they will fit in a Jeep Compass

  2. Pictures to follow later. Got to get them unloaded out of daughters Jeep Compass then put up a new OTA antenna and paint Dynaco ST-70 bell caps then I can mess with speakers. Helluva nice guy and fun to talk to. He was in the back woods of Arkansas. Just moved out there on 500 acres and building a new house. He'd bought some new Klipsch towers I think he said.

  5. Anyone who has used Klipsch speakers with various amplifiers knows they do not all sound the same........and some are simply down right not compatible with Klispch. This thread is meant to be helpful by mentioning solid state amps that you KNOW sound good with Klipsch speakers.........and perhaps provide your experience about the amp or amps you mention. I have always loved and preferred the tube sound with my Klipsch speakers. But as I got into more complicated systems that required multiple amplifiers it became impractical to have tubes in all the amps. I gravitated to using tube preamps and solid state amps that closely replicated the tube sound as a fall back. I can't say enough about how beneficial this experience has been. No tube maintenance (except the preamp)........."almost" tube sound. I have been using vintage McIntosh MC-250 (50 w/ch) stereo amps and MC-2100 (100 w/Ch) stereo amps with excellent results. These were McIntosh first generation solid states with circuit designs that were very similar to tube circuits (biasing, phase splitters, push/pull, transformers / autoformers). I had them rebuilt by DeWick in Tennessee.................same as you would a vintage tube amp (power supply and audio path updates). If you find and MC-250 / MC-2100 that is operating properly and has been brought up to date...........these are a very good match to Klipsch speakers. You can find these amps in original or close to original condition on ebay and other places and have them rebuilt. It's worth it to go this route as well if you wanted. By the way...........nice to have solid state forum now.

  8. I use two amps to one set of Khorns. Standby for a photo Currently only my Emotiva XPA-5 left and right channels are connected to the left (default) side. When my new amp arrives it will go on the right (switched) side. The center connections are to the speakers. I program my triggers to change amps. I have used this setup for several years.

  9. I can highly recommend Matt and his ToolShed amps and pre-amps. The guy is the real deal to do business with. You get a very high quality amp and get to customize your wood colors too if you like. This is old school craftsmanship, built like a tank and as heavy as a tank too. The sound is even better than the looks, these amps are tailored to Klipsch Heritage taking advantage of the high efficiency. With 12 watts it is ideal for you Cornwalls. It will certainly play louder than you can handle and will not break up and fall apart at any volume. I have 2 of his amps and 1 phono preamp. These will be the last I will over purchase.

  11. True of the dub I made using DBX encoding in 1976 from my freshly opened "Dark Side of the Moon." Never heard a better one yet and it's still good even digitized! Would LOVE to have a 24/88.2 or better digitized copy of that. Kind of Blue even in less than stellar CDs remains one of the finest recording I've ever heard. Magic music by magic musicians recorded by magical engineers in a magic place. BETTER than the technology allowed as absurd as that might sound. Dave

  12. Dynaco VTA ST-70 or 120 from Bob Latino at tubes4hifi would be a contender. They can make you one assembled ready to go with tubes or add your own choice. Not that I'm partial or anything.

  15. In other news... if you are using tube amps with multiple taps for different impedance loads, there are some very interesting things you can do with how you hook up your speakers - if you have separate LF and HF connections on the speakers you can use the different taps to manage relative attenuation. Just scroll down to the first and second illustrations to see where he's going, then go back and read from the beginning. By the way, I have never seen these possibilites detailed like this anywhere else. VinylSavior - speakers impedance and taps

  16. Enjoy...What a beautiful day today...Bitburger is going down here in my own world. Trying to listen to FM, i-Heart radio will not tune in 94.9. Stuck with 92.3 89.7 and 105 something. My DAC is in for an upgrade, I'm completely digital and without music except FM right now.. Turn it up...

  18. I have had this problem in the past with frayed speaker wire: a short in the line kept causing my amp to cut out. When I replaced the wire the problem went away. I would definitely check all connections very carefully as that seems a more likely culprit than the speakers.

  19. I like the I Nuke DSP amps. I have 7. They match perfect with the SI and UM 18 driver and no need for a Mini DSP since they have all the DSP needed to dial the subs in. My first passive sub amp was a Crown. It was decent and no complaints. A fellow forum member suggested the taking the Crown back and getting the I Nukes with the DSP. Some people like the old heavy amps but, over the past 4+ years, these have been rock solid and plenty of power. Some people don't like the amber lights, silver color or fan noise with some of the earlier amp. I had 15+ forum members over last Oct. and nobody even mentioned the fans. They are not as loud as the projector fan which is not loud . The I Nukes are a favorite for the AVS DIY guys because they are a good bang for the buck and get the job done.

  23. The question is will spending $4000 get you there? You can get there for much less and not sacrifice quality, look or SQ IMHO. You just won't be able to impress someone with how much you have spent. It would be better to blow them away by the sound. People want Klipsch systems based on the sound, liveliness and emotion.

  24. I absolutely LOVE the active crossover, honestly I will never go passive again! I am definitely one that loves customization and I love the fact that I can get these to sound just the way I want.

  25. Out of the dozen or so pre-recorded 7 1/2 ips 4 track tapes I have purchased I have maybe two that were better than vinyl. They are quiet, better separation and more dynamic. But the two track 15 ips tapes (that come from who really know where) 90% have been better than vinyl and better than CD in every way except sometimes noise. The two track tapes are stored tails out so you have to rewind them first to listen. My digitizing of these seem to preserve the magic so I have not played any of the tapes more than a couple of times. Been researching ways to improve playback by using outboard preamps, but they are pricey and I am not sold they would be that much better so ignorance is bliss. Brad

  26. Hello. The Khorns I have are original 1956 & 1957. So the unfinished version was sold without finished shell?

  27. The deck was delivered to an old time Studer tech in Franklin TN that still services pro tape decks in the Middle Tennessee area. The seller is replacing the pinch roller but I wonder about the capacitors and battery as well. Seems that these need attention as they are 30 years old. BTW I am getting the original binder with QC sheet and all documentation that came when the deck was purchased by the seller in 1987. Now I have to go to schoold to learn how to get the most out of the deck. Brad

  29. Scott, although you have a budget of $4k, it may not be necessary to spend anything approaching that amount to achieve your goal. A careful assessment of your listening requirements should be done first: how loudly do you listen, how far from the speakers do you sit when listening, what type of music do you enjoy? The nice thing about Klipsch speakers is their high sensitivity/efficiency which often eliminates the need to go with very high power. If you post more details, we can get some idea of just how much power you will need to satisfy those requirements. Maynard

  30. You people with your crazy wood skills. Everything looks fantastic from the KHorns, false walls and log home. And once again and will keep repeating whenever I see these great projects I can't cut a 2x4 straight with a chop saw. Or table saw. Or radial arm saw. Handsaws are verboten!!!

  31. Ellery, I haven't tried this yet but have you tried using a Harsch crossover configuration (4th order Butterworth LF, 2nd order Bessel HF with 1/2 crossover wavelength delay)? (The presentation in French can be found here.) The impulse and phase response are apparently improved over Linkwitz-Riley. If you're looking for crisper impulse response, this is an easy and cheap way to do it, assuming that you're already running on a digital crossover.
