  11. 1. birth 2. a homemade K-horn with Klipsch components. [My father collaborated with PWK when he was an assistant EE prof. at SMU in the '50s. When PWK came to Dallas for the day, he'd sometimes stop by SMU to talk to EE department faculty.] 3. 2007 (suffice it to say that I almost invested in Khorns and center Belle in the late 70s when I heard them set up at a Houston hi-fi store.) 4. Jubilees (presently with TAD TD-4002 compression drivers and Xilica XP-8080 crossover).

  14. Found Klipsch only about 15 years ago at age 45 when looking for horn speakers, Altec Lansing. Altec was only making computer speakers at the time so I looked for others. Knowing nothing about Klipsch I bought a set of Synergy speakers for Ht from dealer on the coast, I had 2 Ch speakers already. The 2 Ch speakers I built from a old book I found, horn mid and tweeter and a 15" bass in a ported cabinet. Strangely after I started looking into what else Klipsch made I found heritage and almost fell off my chaIr when I seen the Cornwall, I jumped up and got a tape measure to find out the speaker my dad and I I built over 15 years earlier was within A 1/2" of a Cornwall and same overall layout. Eventually I blew out some of the drivers and thought it was time to look at Klipsch's better models, could be why I don't care for Reference models I was sucked in by Heritage models listening to something similar for many years. Now I'm done, I have had many speakers over the years and always like the horn/live sound.

  15. I'm the baby in this respect. I heard of Khorns. The stuff of legend and frankly I thought the guy BSing [he was known to expand the truth] Huh.. Bigfoot does exist ... I bought a pair of R15M's for Christmas .... Said these are good for entry level ... bought a pair of LaScalas, still in Indiana. I will get them in Sept. still getting up the nerve to build the MWM bins. That's for fun.

  16. 1977, I was 18. Went with friends to a stereo store and heard Hersey and LaScala and was blown away. Always planned to get some "someday". I went down the path of "build your own" and built several pair of Speakerlab speakers to get that Klipsch sound at a bargain price. Probably built a dozen pair over the years for friends and family. First bought legit Klipsch around 1983 with a pair of Cornwalls that I only had a short time before a buddy "had to have them" in his bar. Fast forward 20-25 years and four kids in school and speakers took a back seat. Once they were out of college it was time to finally get my Klipsch fix. Started with RB61's but quickly progressed to Belles, LaScalas, more Belles, Hereseys and then more LaScalas. It is definitely a slippery slope.

  20. invasive plant that causes 3rd-degree burns, permanent blindness discovered in Virginia Fox News•June 17, 2018 Invasive plant that causes 3rd-degree burns, permanent blindness discovered in Virginia More Officials in Virginia are warning residents to be on the lookout after an invasive plant was found Tuesday in the northern part of the state that can cause third-degree burns and even permanent blindness. The Massey Herbarium at Virginia Tech said in a Facebook post that 30 giant hogweed plants were discovered in Clarke County, located between Winchester and Leesburg. The plant contains a very toxic sap, that when combined with sun exposure, can cause severe health hazards. "In brief, the sap prevents your skin from protecting itself from sunlight, which leads to a very bad sunburn," according to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. "Heat and moisture (sweat or dew) can worsen http://www.foxnews.com/health/2018/06/17/invasive-plant-that-causes-3rd-degree-burns-permanent-blindness-discovered-in-virginia.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+foxnews%2Fhealth+(Internal+-+Health+-+Text)

  22. My buddy came home from his hitch in the Navy, circa 1981(?) with a pair of Heresy 1's and a Yamaha integrated Amp. Best sounding speakers i ever heard. Knew right then I would own Klipsch speakers in my future, I was listening to EPI 90's at the time & still have those. I went to Continental Sound in Queens which was the local Klipsch dealer and audtioned Forte II, when I asked the salesman what was next up the foodchain he showed me the Chorus II in the brochure. I figured if I loved the Forte, I would REALLY love the Chorus II, I ordered them without auditioning them. One of the better decisions of my life. Picked up the Chorus the same day I was moving into my first apartment. Too bad the elevator was out, my friends carried the Chorus up six flights of stairs into my studio apartment. I am not quite sure burgers at Jackson Hole restaurant and a bottle of champagne for their wives made up for the effort expended. I still have them, freshend up with Crites upgrades, and they still sound wonderful. I can't see ever parting with them.

  26. Just to show you different tastes.............when I acquired an NBS preamp I immediately did not like how it sounded at all. I couldn't put my finger on what was causing the thick rolled off vintage sound (my description). It was a real problem for me. Well I couldn't get those expensive Jupiters out of there fast enough. Not for me at all. I recapped with Auricaps and all became well. Just an example of what you read on audio forums may not taste the same when the change comes around to your house. Good Lord, I can't even imagine my VRDs with those Jupiters. Immediate surgery would be required.

  27. OK, so Sunday afternoon I ripped back into the SH's and did the initial changes I posted about. Claudes original crossover mods. Jumping the taps for the Squawker and Tweeter 1 spot for a 3db boost. I doubled the first Cap from 2uf to 4uf. I used 2 2uf caps. I had purched extra incase. Same Dayton 1% caps. Threw them all back together.....and was happy to hear they sounded much "smoother" and balanced. Still retained the excellent bass boost. However, something just seemed a bit 'off' still. Not that they sounded bad, which I want to stress....never at any point have they been unsatisfactory. I without a doubt love this mod and highly recommend it. Still, I was ready to start plotting my next move. I then sat down to read this thread and saw Claudes rec to completely remove the 33uf cap on the woofer. Remember, my Heresy 1.5's and have the E2 network. So after reading, I jumped back in the SH's and took the 33uf cap out. Plugged em back in. This time, the 'off' sound was now ON. I believe Claude was spot on with his thoughts on the 33Uf cap and the inductor were choking the woofers output around the 400-800 hz region. They now sound Amazing imo, and about 6 other people who Ive showed. In fact my Buddy who I just restored a set of Cornwall 1's for was floored by the change. I took the Heresy off him as some trade toward the CW restoration. He couldnt believe the difference. He now is looking for another pair so I can do these same mods for him. He offered to buy mine on the spot. Though Im keeping them. Not ready to let them go. Not sure I ever will. These now have a secure spot in my 'Stash' of audio thats off limits. Ive really enjoyed this whole process. Ive repaired/restored/modded a lot of speakers in my day. But something about this mod was just really fun. Extracting sound like this from such a nice stout package is a real feat. Claude really nailed this mod, the fact he freely shared this info and R&D time shows what a great guy he is. I still plan on running measurement with Claude when he has some time. Id like to see where they are at now, as I'm sure he does as well. I tend to be someone who's never done tweaking a project. So I mays still get the Crites Autoformer, and knock the Inductor down to 2.5. Per Claudes advice. Again, this is only if the numbers show a glaring issue that could be corrected or improved. Perhaps even a move to another Tweeter, or maybe new Diaphragms...idk. Im really happy where they are at though. Im gonna give it a few days to really settle in. Im listening like crazy though, last night I just couldnt turn it off. The music sounded to good! That right there is one of the best tests around. If it makes me wanna listen to album after album....they sound good. So stay tuned....Ill keep updating any and all changes. Incase any other Heresy 1.5 owners are interested in this mod.

  33. Glad you found a match for what you were looking for. Just for grins I downloaded a db meter app for my iPhone. I found my normal listening level is 70 and my loud setting is 95db. I then took it to 120 db and realized that is just too loud. However, my Marantz/Chorus II combo was up to the task.

  34. I have the Marantz SR6011 and it is much higher end than the 5011. Highly recommended. It has 125 big watts, meaning it is more powerful than my Onkyo 717 which is also 125 wpc. The 6011 is a 2017 model but it is far above entry level in terms of the amount of speakers it can drive. What the older models lack is features such as the Alexa connectivity but if you have the budget for it, you can get years of service out of it and it will drive nearly any configuration of speakers you need.

  39. The thing with the vanes is a JBL lens they used for mids and highs. These units sounded nice with wide dispersion but were expensive to make and prone to damage. They were generally used on concert speakers and other pro sound speakers.

  41. In the post directly after this one, you asked me if the kids should be pushed. Mark, given your common sense and life experiences along with your comments in the above post tells me you know exactly what to do. You push a kid, they push back. I think it is FAR better to engage your students, empower them, encourage them to find what they are good at and to be their best, always. Your role will be as a mentor, a teacher and to provide your technical knowledge and expertise to keep your student healthy through proper mechanics. I was a pretty serious dad while raising my two boys. The oldest was a pretty good pitcher and at the age of 12 he could throw a curve ball no other kid could hit. I told him if he continued to throw curve balls I would take him out of baseball. That's because there is a thing called a growth plate where the two bones in the arm grown towards each other. Throwing too many curve balls can damage that growth plate. I told him WHY I didn't want him to throw curve balls and I had him read the same information I did. He understood and developed his mechanics and threw fast balls. He didn't win every game, but he developed and instead of chasing the major leagues, he chased "next level." That was a good short term and long term strategy. I always engaged him in the decision making process. My son got a lot of attention for being such a good pitcher and he said he might want to be a big league player some day. I told him that 'yes" you can throw curve balls and everybody will say how great you are, but nobody has ever got a major league contract for striking out 12 year-olds. I asked him to become a good athlete and I sent him to pitching camps, I didn't know anything how to throw a baseball. I taught him to think long term and let his body grow. He ended up being a solid 6'2" and he could pitch, ending his career as high school pitcher. He choose to leave baseball to concentrate on college. He was good enough he could have gone on to be a college pitcher, but he made his own decision not to do that. He had a full academic scholarship and wanted to study to become an attorney so that is the path he choose for himself. As a parent I did the right thing by raising him so he would have options. He was athletic, musical and smart. He picked his own path and I could not have been prouder.

  43. Thanks for the info Chris, I will give the tone controls a spin! I am not a huge classical fan, maybe 50 or so cds. Not all of which are the greatest pressings, that might contribute to my perception of what I hear.

  44. From my demastering efforts I've found that full orchestra recordings are usually more boosted in the 1-5 kHz region. Boosted violin sections above 1 kHz via mastering EQ always sound steely to my ears. There is usually a crossover in the 1-5 kHz region that introduces phase shifts and other disturbances that are audible for mass strings. Just as frequently, the cellos and double basses are rolled off starting at 450 Hz at around 3 dB/octave--which is the reason why so many people leave their bass tone control turned up to partially compensate. Chris

  45. To my ear massed strings are the most difficult thing for a speaker to reproduce. Individual violin solos much less so. In addition to the quality of the source equipment, I believe the room, i.e. reflections, rugs, bare walls, distance from the speakers etc, effect classical music moreso than other less demanding forms of music. Just my opinion, YMMV.

  46. Some people were asking for a long post about my opinion of the RF-7III, so here goes. I’m not a fancy audio writer for a magazine so fair warning. Second warning, this is my personal opinion which typically means my dealer hat is off. Sometimes I’m just a fan. First of all the looks. There has been a push back against the cosmetic changes but I think it is pretty unfounded myself. Plinth: I’m indifferent on the plinth, it’s kinda cool but you don’t really even have to use it, so I don’t know why people are complaining about it. If you don’t like it then don’t bolt it on and instead use pads or something. It’s pretty simple. Chamfer: What was a big improvement in cosmetics was the 45 degree or so chamfer on the front edge. This alone makes it look much more modern. Get used to seeing this then go back to the old version and the RF-7II’s look like a monkey coffin. Matte baffle: I think this was an improvement myself. I’m the opposite of most people though. I’m indifferent to it on the black but absolutely love it on the cherry. It breaks up the sea of wood plus gives the copper woofers a complimentary backdrop to look striking against if that makes any sense. The old cherry finish simply does not match copper woofers. You know what does compliment copper nicely though? Black. This baffle probably allows the chamfer on the edges to be manufactured much easier as well. Installing a strip of veneer on that edge would slow construction down significantly I imagine. Ports: the new rectangular ports are a little funny looking but hey, they’re on the back, nobody can see them. Horn: The appearance of the horn is really the only thing I’m not a fan of. The sheen doesn’t really match and the edge doesn’t exactly blend in with the baffle. This however is way better than everybody including me expected, just more seamless than I thought it would be. I think the sonic benefits outweigh any nitpicking of the appearance, just no question, but this is the only thing that is a little odd looking in my opinion. Finish: I think the new natural cherry is a nice addition myself. I was a little disappointed in the walnut, at this point I can't recommend buying walnut. If it was the same veneer as the Forte III, sure, but I don't think it is, may possibly be stained oak or something, I don't know, all I know is that walnut Forte III's are gorgeous and these don't seem to live up to that situation. Black is always a safe bet of course. As for the sound, I think people would be very surprised. Treble: Man this horn is just straight up pleasant. I can listen to Metallica from 3’ away at high volume and I’m just comfortable. I mean yeah it’s loud but it’s not like I’m diving for the ear plugs. What other current Klipsch tower can you say that about? Nothing. It just sounds right. There aren’t any hot spots, it’s pleasant, it’s not bright, the snap of the beater on the skin of a kick drum is real nice and thick, honestly you just couldn’t ask for much better in my opinion. Midrange: Maybe it’s my imagination but I think upper midrange has been improved somehow. The RF-7II’s would often sound what I call “shouty”. I’m sure much of it was the recording, but still, mid to high male vocals sometimes just sounded uncontrolled with certain frequencies sounding unnatural. I don’t get that at all with these. If you read the product literature it mentions the separate chambers of the woofers helping to clean up the midrange and eliminated standing waves. If that’s what I’m hearing, then well… it worked. Bass: So I’m a kick drum junkie. I had Metallica’s Hardwired To Self Destruct album going, bass knob was cranked on the Parasound Halo gear. Honestly I was very surprised when putting them up against the Forte III. When the double bass flurries came about like at the end of Hardwired, I felt like these things just ate it up. Some speakers are tight but they don’t extend very low. Some speakers and subs can extend low but they’re not that tight, so kick drums can turn into a sloppy mess. I felt like these were just perfect. Double bass flurries were just tight yet I didn’t feel like I needed a sub, it was both full and tight. The additional height as compared to the Heresy or Fortes that I’m used to hearing in my living room was interesting as well, it was just a wall of super tight double bass, absolutely killer. If you set these up and the bass doesn’t sound right, it ain’t the speakers fault. I had them powered by a Parasound Halo A23 and felt like it was all I would ever need. As for general things I noticed, I love the new box artwork, that’s snazzy and modern. These things gained about 10 pounds due to the separate chambers and you can really tell it, harder to move around. Would have liked to have seen the aluminum speaker terminals from the Forte show up on these but I’m sure there’s additional costs. In summary, man don’t be trying to snag some RF-7II’s before they’re gone, hold out for some 7III’s, it’s worth it. I've had people message me and say they were in tears by the second song because they finally found a speaker that didn't make their ears bleed. I've sold some to RF-7II owners who compared them side by side and soon after the 7II's were up for sale, they said there was just no comparison. These are a very significant upgrade.
