Happy Mother's Day! Although she's not my mother, the mother of our sons received flowers and a card. She also enjoyed the freshly ground Colombian Supremo from Sam's Club, plus cinnamon buns prepared by our older son. Great minds think alike, as he and I purchased the same card. A simple "Happy Mother's Day" as the message. FYI, IMO, the best bang for the cut flower buck are Alstroemerias and/or carnations. They tend to last two weeks, or more.4 points

The interview went well, but I didn't get the job. I did get a call that, even though I didn't get the job, they were very impressed with me and to be sure and watch their site to see if there is something else I may be interested in. Also, if anything comes up, they will be sure and contact me. They thought I would be a great fit and bring new and fresh ideas to the company. Oh well, it is what it is. Life goes on.4 points

it's been a while since i browsed over here. to tell you the truth, the La Scala totally fulfill my addiction to music and finally put me at peace with the whole audiophile nonsense quest. i may sometimes get excited about some new/old gear but these speakers have the power to re-center my dedication to music. after some listening i ask myself: what else or more do you imagine you can expect? a few friends (with some background and equipment) came over and just... faced the music. what struck them most was the easyness, natural and involvment the LS convey. what bugs me is i have an opportunity to hear and maybe acquire early 80's KHorns and i'm between a rock and hard place: stay happy with the LS or take the risk of KH... i'll keep you posted ASAP. all the best to klipsch and music lovers ;-)2 points

The 2 day door and window installation lasted four full days and touch up painting on the fifth day. At least we know who not to use the next time2 points

From what I read, this does not come in through email or phishing but can hit your computer through your network at work etc. The best way to protect yourself is to get a portable hard drive and do a nightly system image backup while you sleep. That way if you get hit, you simply wipe your drive and re-load the system image.2 points

As I've said before, the only 901s I've heard that I liked were in Alphonso's Mercantile in Mendocino. The lowest amplifier power Alphonso ever drove them with was 350 w.p.c. (a Phase Linear 700, in 1972 when he first got the Bose set-up) and the highest was 1,000 w.p.c. -- they sounded pretty good. All other 901s I've heard were muddy, and not very dynamic. Bose never revealed the efficiency or sensitivity of the 901 (AFAIK), but one magazine strongly implied it would need 22.5 times the power of a Klipschorn or a JBL D130 in one of their horn loaded boxes. Both of the latter had an EIA efficiency of 54, above F3, which would be 104 dB at 4 feet at 1 wt input, IIRC.1 point

what i wonder is guys that the pio vsx-921 cant fully drive them right? that is a truth? here is my room i increased the TRIM for Klipschs to +1.5db (didn't touch the spekar volume which is -3.0db for the klipsch ) and i changed the whole speakers distance manually and they sound much more accurate than the MCAA configured.i set the Klipschs as 3.65meters away from me.Definitely i am not that far from the speakers but they sound much more accurate. 2.65meters for the center 2.60meters for the surround back you may have some opinion for my room according to those pictures.1 point

For those in the Chicago area, The Chicago Audio society will be hosting a meeting featuring the Destination Audio Speakers and Tube electronics next Sunday at the Courtyard by Marriott Woodale 900 N Wood Dale Rd. from 1-6pm. I just got the invite and am not personally affiliated with them. For the record, I am the former owners of K-Horns and two sets of LaScalas. My main system today is inspired by Klipsch and as soon as I move into a bigger place, will order a set of Jub bass horns. I like my ESS tweeter towers and LeCleach/TAD mids just fine.1 point

The CL posting includes several of my pet peeves regarding selling used audio. Way too much detail about the history of Klipschorns. No one unfamiliar with the history of Klipsch would be convinced to pay nearly $1,000 for an old DIY project. Unfortunately for the seller, no one familiar with Klipsch is likely to pony up that kind of money for this "EXACT copy" (emphasis in original); Which brings me to my second criticism, hyperbole. The hyperbolic use of "exact" is the tip of the way too wordy iceberg; and Last, referencing new prices to justify the asking price, especially since this is a "copy," rather than a real Klipschorn. Depending upon the components, the collection of parts might be worth the asking price to the correct buyer(s). IMO, the listing should identify the individual -- Non-Klipsch -- components and and throw in the questionable bass bin as a bonus. I guess merely describing it as a "rare and sought after" genuine Mitchell was not deemed good enough. YMMV1 point

Obviously not. I'm out. You can be sure that if Honda did make a toaster, it would be over priced and they would charge extra for options such as rubber feet and dials, knobs, and handles.1 point

Based on my listening thus far, sound quality is not impaired by setting "SACD Output" to PCM. The good news with the Oppo universal players, is that it is quick and easy to switch between "SACD DSD Output", to "SACD PCM Output with bass management". The issue of using a subwoofer with large speakers (e.g., RF-7II) involves trade-offs, and potential frustrations. IME, a remote control for the subwoofer is essential (e.g., Klipsch P-312W). I can get the subwoofer set appropriately for classical music, and then some @#$%^& engineer inserts obnoxious LFE garbage in a Hollywood movie, and I need to turn the subwoofer down. Bottom line, IME a subwoofer is not essential for enjoying most music with the RF-7 II and my Snell Type CV, however when "dialed in" correctly, the sub can enhance some music (e.g., pipe organ). My Klipsch Palladium P-37F benefits more often from a subwoofer.1 point

I think Mike meant to say the Altec will lose polar pattern control at a much "higher" frequency than will the Klipsch. I don't think there will be much of a contest between the two. By the way the Altec was designed by Don Keele Jr. and the horns were built by Electrovoice. The deal was EV would rebrand them as Altec for a number of years then they could build their own and sell as EV.' Another interesting note was that Don got paid by Altec for designing a whole series of horns then got paid a comission by VEV for bringing the build job to them. After that Don went over to JBL and designed all their CD horns and gave them a new patent to go with the horns and won an Oscar for technical excellence. So he did the same trick at EV Altec and JBL. A while later he worked with PWK for about a year. Don single hand-idly changed the Pro speaker world and his work still impacts it to this day.1 point

I believe he will find imaging and clarity issues compared to the K402 due inpart to the diffraction slot and differences in the vertical versus the horizontal apparent apex locations of this type of design. See pdf specification attachment below the picture. This horn also looses polar control versus the K402 at the lower frequencies in both the vertical and horizontal angles and will require a different crossover (passive or active) compared to the K402. (ie: he can't simply stick it on top of the Jub and expect a reasonable comparison. MRII594A_hfhorn_spec_sheet.pdf1 point

I think this is an important factor when setting up your component chain. Audio components can only degrade the pure source so if you have an expensive DAC that is re-digitized into a AVR then it may be better to get an AVR with an integrated DAC so the digital signal is processed and converted to analog only once.1 point

OK.......what about the swamping resistor? That eats as much power as the music....... In fact I have realized that when that fellow came over with his 2 watt amp I had ESNs in my Khorns. 3-way ESNs actually have 2 swamping resistors.......Hmmmm. OK, what happens when a giant bass note comes along? Just wondering. You sure the calculation is telling what it really takes to deliver the clean punch?1 point
