  1. Mustering as much civility as I can: These are superstitions. The first claim is provably false, the second claim is a misstatement of what dither does, and believing otherwise will not change the facts no matter how forcefully anybody asserts those beliefs.

  7. Thank you again. So the guy with the LaScalas is very difficult to deal with. I ask him questions and he is very hesitant to reply. He won't even give me the SN so that I can determine the age, etc. The guy with the Cornwalls listed them here as well I noticed! He is firm on the price. I guess that I will keep looking. Thank you again.

  8. Fwiw, I would separate out high school/college antics with what folks in the military deal with. Imo, the problem with today's social media/forum dialog is all of the non-sequiturs and name calling which detracts from at the subject at hand. If folks spent more time thinking about what they are going to post in that regard instead of calling someone who disagrees with them an "idiot" or the like I think carries over from political discussions...that's my take.

  9. For the same reason that some people still prefer chocolate ice cream over vanilla -- they like it. That's a layman's explanation of dither, and not a very good one. The true purpose of dither is to decorrelate the quantization error and the signal. Believing otherwise will not change the facts no matter how forcefully anybody asserts those beliefs. Obsequious? Non sequitur.

  17. I think the construction and wiring job is outstanding. And you did the wiring quite right. Your signal leads are short and distanced to minimize and crosstalk. But your DC power and DC control signals are neatly bundled as these have no crosstalk issues.

  19. I believe you will be rewarded for your patience. But I'd also give my contact info to the guy with the Corns. Maybe after 3 or 4 weeks of no sale, he will come down to reality on the price. Maybe not. I had never searched Chicago CL before, they sure have a lot of vintage audio gear changing hands. 2.7 million residents can't hurt.

  21. So... after what feels like forever I have finally completed this build. I had to make many changes along the way, but I am happy with the final product. After A great deal of listening I decided the SP-14 circuit was not the best for my system. Too much gain. So I sent it on it’s way and went a different route. In the spirit of keeping this system all tube I opted for a ACF -2 octal from glassware. This is a buffer. There are many options for tubes, but I decided to use 6sn7. I was originally splitting my source signal to an amp for my speakers and sub. This sounded good, but now it sounds much better. The bass is cleaner and my speakers have an increase in detail. I am very happy with the sonic results. I would definitely recommend this project to anyone running multiple amps or driving long cables. The best best part is I can toggle between sources again without having to change cables. That was getting annoying.

  26. Ok, finally settled in for the evening after a long work week... Now I can focus on what's actually important: subwoofers! But first, regarding the controversial word I used in my initial post in reference to subs, "MUSICALITY".... I was only trying to emphasize how I intend to use whatever sub I wind up building.. that is, what I want/need it to DO. Nothing more, or less. Perhaps I should have left that word out... certainly didn't mean to stir the pot. I'm still learning the vocabulary about all this stuff. But surely I'm not out of line to use such adjectives as "tight" or "accurate" or "fast" when referring to the sound and performance of a subwoofer? And I've noticed those words most commonly being used to describe the sonic properties of a driver mounted in a sealed box vs. other types of enclosures. The same driver mounted into a (comparatively) massive folded-horn type of enclosure WILL have different sonic characteristics... not right or wrong, just different. Truth be told, the number of times I'll actually get to crank up the volume on my system to, let's say, the average used in a movie theater - and then leave it up there while I sit and enjoy a favorite album start to finish - will be few and far between (this is sometimes referred to as "Qw" or "wife coefficient"). I'm trying to say that maybe sometimes less is more... more ideal for a given situation... and that smaller can still be sufficient. Now, I'm sure that there are some really good folded horn designs out there that really do achieve the best of both worlds: still sound tight, accurate, & fast - but don't necessarily take up a huge amount of space. That's what I'm here to learn about. But one can easily go overboard with a sub, no? Is bigger necessarily always better? I have heard some BIG subs in the past that were most certainly LOUD, and literally shook the entire room/rattled windows/etc... but to me, they didn't sound "musical"... (oops, I said it again... I guess I just don't know of a better word...). Regardless of my choice of words, I know what I mean. I've heard LOUD subs- but at the same time they sounded mushy/muddled. They basically sounded like crap. Subs CAN be disproportionately large, even to the point of being humorous... sort of like the time I was with my brother-in-law at the lake on his nice Rinker, and he commented as a 40' Scarab roared by, "there goes another poor guy showing off his penis extension." (Sorry if I offended any cigarette boat owners out there... I personally think they're pretty awesome to watch! 😎)

  27. I'm totally cool with that, but that's a pretty high cumulative DeciBel to Beer ratio, though. LOL. Mine can play as loud as you want or need, so it's good to save it for last, although, unless it's the "Phoenix" plane crash demo in Full HT vs. 2 channel music, I do keep the music at about 85 dbA to start, but the guests are in charge of the remote volume control, so you never know.

  29. IMO, details of PWK’s interests, beliefs and eccentricities are interesting. Paul’s Episcopalian pastor @DRBILL used to post here with interesting anecdotes, which were not privileged. DRBILL last posted in 2012. I suspect he has joined Paul, Belle and Valerie. As the story goes, Paul grew disenchanted with the Presbyterian doctrine of predestination. He saw himself as a free will type, Supposedly he sampled other denominations in Hope before settling on the Episcopalian church because he liked the doctrine and the church organ. DRBILL replied to a PM with the following: @tigerwoodKhorns DRBILL’s references to pipe organs made me think of you.

  31. Not to totally hi-jack this thread, but I’ve met great people through this forum and heard some great systems. Perhaps this OT post can inspire the ears OP to meet local members and audition their systems. This afternoon I was on Woodward Ave riding shotgun in a work van when I heard my name. Next to me was Klipsch friend Brett @bhenry in a Shelby Mustang. As soon as the contractors finish our basement lavatory I will increase efforts to organize a man-cave crawl. IMO, it should end at Claude’s in Pontiac. I do not want to follow Claude’s system. We could start at my place in Birmingham, go to Brett’s in Berkley, move north to Fenton @Escher Mt. Morris @mopardave Burton @kevinmi and any others in the Metro Detroit area before ending at Claude’s. Or, we could do an Oakland County version, with a Genesee County edition on a separate day.

  33. Marvel, I don't want this to become a venue to beat up on Calvinists, BUT I have a joke that needs telling: Didja hear the one about the old Presbyterian gentleman that fell down a steep flight of stairs? He got up, brushed himself off and exclaimed, "I'm glad that's over with!" DRBILL

  35. It's Gilmore for me...hands down. Look at how David changed that band after Sid left. If you look at the credits, Gilmore wrote a lot of their music. Gilmore has a lot of great solo stuff also. To me, he just seems like a nicer guy than Roger. Some of the stories surrounding Roger almost sound like he was a very unkind man, pushing Wright out of the band, then paying him a session musician's wage when he brought him back. There's a reason David, Richard, and Nick left Roger to start their own version of PF. I do like Roger's overall vision for most of their albums....I think The Wall is the best album ever made.

  38. Heresies normally go here from $300 to $450ish (for a perfect set) on Version 1's. Heresy V2's aren't that much more. I recently picked up a pair of 1977 Heresy 1, 'E' export models with laser tags in perfect shape for $380, just to give you an example. I seriously doubt that you will get anywhere near your purchase price on this site. It sounds like the only option is for you to put them back on eBay. I hope you kept the boxes that were used to ship them. People here won't want to insult you by offering what is a realistic price in this neighborhood.

  39. Hey guys. I think I started this thread and have been following the off topic discussion. 😬 I did get the speakers I wanted. And started another thread. A pair of 78 La Scalas. I’m traveling to see some Phish music right now for a few weeks. But would love to check others systems of some locals. I enjoy reading about the horn loaded subs. I am wanting to try open baffle subs which don’t get a lot of talk on here maybe because they don’t blend well with horns? Or maybe no one‘s ever tried them? I love experimenting. I’ll try anything! I love music but mostly I just like listening to sounds.

  40. While there is no written forum rule requiring a posted price, it is generally considered unseemly to expect forum members to bid against each other. There are auction sites for that. Ideally, you state a price, for example $100.00, and the first person who accepts your offer is the new owner. Should someone else later offer $101.00, it’s too late. You determine what action is deemed to “accept” your offer. You could honor a promise to pay. I don’t recommend that. You don’t want to turn down other offers on the strength of a mere promise to pay. I would require payment in full, or, at a minimum, a non-refundable deposit (an option) to hold the item for an agreed number of days. There is is nothing wrong with members making offers, but once you accept an offer it should be over. Members should not try to outbid each other. For example, you post an asking price of $10,000.00. Nothing prevents a member from offering $500.00, which you are free to accept or reject. IMO, once you accept an offer a contract is complete. Other offers cannot be accepted. The foregoing is my opinion based upon general contract principles. You’re free to ignore the advice. Good luck with your sale.

  46. The KG 2.5 are great speakers for what they are... a smaller bookshelf speaker. With dual 6.5" woofers they have very good bass for their size & as all the speakers in the KG line, they sound very good. Granted they aren't heritage & wont sound as good as the bigger more expensive models but, for $40 you can't go wrong. They usually sell for about $125-$150/pr.
