Will paint this morning and see what my finishing looks like. Going to be 98 degrees here today Helping LF pick out a new car. Think she has narrowed it down to a Volvo XC60. Now to haggle a bit. 8. I am at a point with audio where I love trying and hearing new gear but I am tired of the constant search and dealing with the seemingly endless line of folks that appear to be either oblivious or out to take advantage. I also hate the shattered expectations when a piece of gear is supposed to excel and for me it FAILS I find myself asking (myself) am I at a point where any improvements will be nuance at best and spending double or more on a component is going to garner enough to make it a worthy investment. I feel like my modest headphone setup is at the point of diminished return (except perhaps my dac) There are several higher end headphones on the market that would cost minimum of double and as high as 4 times what my current HiFiMan HE500 cost. I find myself wondering how these monsters of headphones sound then I play my system and I have to ask how can anything sound twice or more better than this The fact that I question this so much kind of tells me I am at that point, yet without hearing the other headphones how can I truly be sure. Perhaps I need therapy so I can learn how to be satisfied How do some of you pick a point that is far enough and then just be happy with what you have ??

  9. Below that, it's a sealed box 15" woofer radiating into a very tight corner with a lot less gain. Go build a Quarter Pie horn, put it under the Belle and get a free Octave down to 50 hz. with the same woofer. Plus you will raise you tweeters to better ear level.

  10. In many regards, I think ignorance is bliss. Many of you in this hobby hear a particular system or component and spend years and $$ trying to replicate it. My goal has always been the pursuit of a pleasing (to me) music playback system. I haven't listened to more than 10 properly sorted systems, nor am I emotionally tied to a format, a sound signature, or brand name (Klipsch is excluded). So my choices are guided more by my budget and the philosophy of keeping it as simple as possible, with incremental upgrades in components that matter. Most of my tinkering these days is with playback software and horn positions. I fully expect that half of you would listen to my system and walk away thinking I was deaf or high on my own farts. In either case, it doesn't really matter because I enjoy the experience I get out of it and it brings a smile to my face when I think about it.

  11. Okay, I am just going to say it. Would you just sit back and enjoy your rockin kick butt system and stop over thinking things? Seriously, your rig is awesome and you can tweak until there is no tomorrow, but you got to just put on the brakes and enjoy the spoils a little bit. As far as too far out, I had the same problem with movies. My 63's were lined up right in the corners and toed in at about 45 degrees at about 14 feet apart. Great for music, aweful for HT with a 59 inch TV . When things panned to the right and left, the sounds were way off the screen. Bill

  13. Agree with TWK. ^^^ There are multiple reasons for enjoying your music. When I was younger, I had a fascination about getting theoretical "perfect" sound reproduction. Now I'm older, and I don't want "perfect" I want "good", that being what sounds good to my ears. I matured and moved on, the same way I liked the Beatles when I was 10, but now I am older and I like Beethoven. To me, it's about a maturation and a personal growth in listening to music. It's all good, but I don't want the same thing at 60 that I did when I was ten.

  15. Oppo are great. Do you need super audio support? If you only need a CD, grab an older Oppo dvd player. If it is part of the HT system get an Oppo 103 (7.1 RCA outputs, toslink, etc.) It is a 3D blu-ray with 4K upscaling, wired or included wireless dongle (has pandora, netflix, built in etc.) It support DSS audio. It has 2 HDMI ins (you can hook up an AppleTV) and 2 HDMI outputs. It has two extra USB, you can hook up a Amazon stick. The USB can mount a hard drive, it reads mp3, flac, etc., it will read video and picture files as well. The bonus for the older receivers, it has volume control on the remote. The old DVD players do as well.

  16. I have owned many fine CD players including a Denon DCD-3520, three Cambridge Audio 840C's, CA 640C v2, Adcom carousel players, NAD C542, etc. Of all I have owned, none, not even the mighty Denon DCD-3520 and CA 840C have sounded as good as my NAD C542. It is fast and punchy with detail in spades and will easily come in under your $300.00 threshold. http://app.audiogon.com/listings/cd-sacd-players-nad-c-542-c542-cd-player-with-hdcd-2015-06-05-digital-01060-florence-ma Factory refurbished with warranty from Spearitsound for $249.00 including shipping. 18. I offered the lend mwells the forte until I found him another pair. My friend won't need a pair for a couple months. He declined, no worries. If anyone wants to let me know what they are looking for - type, model, finish, price range - your location - how far they are willing to drive. - email I will happily keep an eye out. Then, if a deal comes up in the area, I can email directly and quickly. Deals like this one go FAST, so if you see an email you will need to act quickly. I have done this for many people and offered this on the forum before. Some people have benefited greatly. Send me a PM if interested.

  22. Knowing what really needs to be fixed helps immensely. There are of course people that believe you can throw money at anything and it'll get better, but that simply isn't how it works. Where I've drawn the line is when I can sit in front of the system for a couple hours and, no matter what's playing back, just get lost in the sound field without any distraction from the equipment in any way.

  23. Audio enjoyment for me is two fold. I love listening to music but I also love the technical aspect of taking a source and routing it as cleanly as possible to my ears. I do sometimes always want to upgrade but then I think about how much benefit I am really going to get vs money in. If I am just wanting to upgrade to satisfy my technical aspirations then I will look up some free/cheap DIY fixes such as room acoustics/speaker placement etc which is more rewarding in the long run.

  24. Generally speaking, as you move any loudspeaker closer to the walls, dips in response will tend to flatten out. Try moving it if it doesn't cost a lot of time and effort to do so, and run REW again. I think that you will see improvement in the 200-400 Hz region peaks and dips. Chris

  28. Interesting question. I don't have any certain answer. But I see some issues. The MSDS on the stuff is http://www.wmbarr.com/ProductFiles/GAF354%20MSDS.pdf. It certainly is not mild. I see some information that it will remove urethane paints, which is tough stuff. So it may be more than you need. Issue: The photos of such horns show them white from the factory. Maybe someone can confirm. I doubt that is a natural fiberglass resin color. It may be that they are spray painted at the factory. Now, what kind of paint that is, is a question. A lacquer is a possibility. So whatever you use might well remove that too. Issue: It seems that you're saying that a previous owner has painted over whatever comes from the factory. We know what sort of paint that is either. I don't know whether it will be possible to determine that by inspection. It seems that you'd like some remover which will take off whatever was added by the previous owner, but not the factory paint (if there is such). I don't have any pat answer. But the above might alert you to issues. WMcD

  29. You may have done this but the output mode with JRiver will greatly affect the sound. If you haven't tried this: Go to out mode Select audio select WASAPI You might also try ASIO. I find WASAPI better with modern DACs. JRiver seems to default to "direct sound" but I think that still leaves Windows affecting the sound.

  31. yeh. not my cup of tea. i'd be interested to see how the veneer installer managed the inside deeper into the dog house. I think that is pretty much impossible to veneer all the way to the back of the cab. have seen some nice looking adaptation of Belle type grill covers to cover what can't be veneered.

  32. Have a look at the used professional/studio models for Marantz or Tascam. They are a good value and within your price range. The usual audiophile brands are very pricey, and if they are less than $30, then they are either ancient or beat to crap.

  33. Personally, I don't mine them at all. I guess they would only look good in limited decor though so point taken.

  36. Thanks! (and thanks for the welcomes; this forum is great). Oh man I've stepped into a new world now - already spent hours reading and learning about these speakers. Given that they are 35 years old . . . not too surprising to hear that there is some damage from over excursion (and apparently I need to replace the capacitors also). I see other K-22s on eBay with this same over excursion effect so maybe this thread will help others. I really appreciate the advice. I understand that it can be fixed (and then I can keep the original drivers) so that's good news! Looks like 2 good options so far. I'm sure that those will create visible repairs but that's to be expected. I found one more glue that seems appropriate to ask about - what does anybody think of this glue: http://www.parts-express.com/parts-express-speaker-repair-glue-1-oz-bottle--340-076?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=pla I like the varnish suggestion because I could easily soak that complete area and be sure that all the fibers are back together. Not sure if the Parts Express glue would soak in as thoroughly. Thanks again!

  40. Already signed up fro that, but I'm still checking my options for SS. We had some tickets for a local movie theater, and headed to an Italian resto in the same block, but instead of going in, we hit the Chinese resto next door. Surprise! About 15 friends were waiting for me. We had a great time. Bruce

  46. I went to our new neighborhood Chipotle today. See attached image if it worked. Sure enough, looks like Heresy in the high wall. Pretty subliminal marketing if that is the intention. Actually think they need a third in the space they have designed. They got a little nervous when I started taking photos of their new operation.
