  1. Helping rebuild/refurbish a forum friend's Welborne Labs Laurel II mono blocks. A tremendous amount of cleanup; many feet of solder wick; complete recapping of all electrolytic, metallized film bypass, and film coupling caps. There was terrible hum and noise in one channel, which turned out to be a heater to cathode short in one of the 6AC7 as well as a bad rectifier socket. Many cracked wires, including capacitor leads, etc. A main issue was over-heating in the 300B filament supply, which was replaced by a relocated full-wave bridge rectifier and CRC filter section (all rebuilt with paralleled resistors for DCR of 1ohm). 300B 5V filaments had been running 4.3VDC, and are now corrected. Once wiring and parts replacement where needed was finished, there was still an inexplicable 60Hz hum in one channel. I worked literally hours on this problem, and finally found the source: hiding under a 3.3uf Solen cap was a wire from the 6.3 VAC heater supply (for the paralleled 6SL7 and 6AC7) leading directly into the grid. That corrected, I have to say these Laurels are now probably the quietest single-ended amps I have. I'm also going to take a picture of the MagneQuest 300B output transformer. They are absolutely huge, the largest output transformers of this kind I've seen. And so, with one more step (new 4 pin finals sockets), I will be very sorry to see these shipped back home this coming week. They are lovely sounding amplifiers; and if you have heard that the 300B is euphonic, syrupy, overly-warm, etc., this circuit thoroughly and comprehensively dispels that myth. With the schematic in (basically) in my head, I'm going to build a pair after I finish up a couple of other project. Forgot to mention: A large choke was used to replace the common resistor in the power supply between the main filter sections for CLCLC. Wonderful amps!

  2. Testing a Khorn outside on a driveway? ROFLMAO That's exactly what I would do if I wanted to manipulate the results in order to make that speaker look bad. But I guess the dummy wanted to be "fair" because that's how he "measures" all of the speakers he tests. The Khorn is designed to be used in 1/8 space, i.e. in or very near a corner. The Stereophile tests were run in 1/2 space, i.e. in an open area with the Khorn sitting on a concrete driveway. No Bueno. The way I understand the enclosed backs on the AK6 is that the speaker doesn't need to be pushed tightly into the corner of the room, and can be adjusted to aim toward the listening position. The one thing I do agree with is that using a DSP and triamping the Khorn improves it's performance.

  4. Pretty sure they're not Heresy's. They have radiators in the back if you look at the second pic. I just bought some 2 year old RF-7 II's a few weeks ago so my Klipsch funds are a little light at the moment.

  8. These are awesome: http://jtrspeakers.com/noesis-215rt.html I heard a 7-ch home theater setup of these at AXPONA. Great bass extension, they didn't bring use a sub. The Noesis 210RT also sounded great.

  10. If one is looking for the Epic style driver arrangement in the present day, JTR speakers are worth a look. They come in 2 way and 3 way designs with a coaxial center horn. Though a tad pricier than a used Epic.

  12. @Thaddeus Smith Congratulations Michael regarding the anniversary and the family outing. I’m sure that you all had a wonderful time and that’s just great. Enjoy the remainder of your day. I remember back in my wedded days, I was an avid bowler once upon a time, and one anniversary i tried (unsuccessfully) to convince my wife that is was our “reactive resin” anniversary according to Hallmark, therefore i should get a new bowling ball for my anniversary gift. She didn’t believe me. Turns out if was our" buy her flowers and eat chinese food" anniversary.

  13. Went to the Dallas World Aquarium with the family this morning as part of a celebration day (11th wedding anniversary). Made a total n00b error and somehow had my EV comp dial set such that everything was shot at ISO 12800 for nearly the entire trip. Nothing totally ruined, but it made for some funky colors and lots of grain, so I applied some quick vintage color profiles in an effort to salvage the overall presentation of the shots. Many shots on my photostream, a few presented below: https://www.flickr.com/photos/97847060@N07/

  15. I've been in conversation with Tim Kresko, Audio Rescue in St. Louis. Tim has experienced some medical challenges and is offering some really good prices for Klipsch Pro to raise some cash. Tim is offering the KPT-456 for $200 each, or $400 for a pair. The KPT-456 uses the same LF as the KPT-904; two K-45 woofers. The 456 uses the venerable Klipsch 1132 HF driver on a tractrix 506 horn. The cabinets are in really nice shape. Unlike the 904 where the HF sits naked on top of the LF, the 456 HF is enclosed in a really nice cabinet the same width and depth as the LF. It looks sort of like the top-hat on a K-horn B model. These are without networks and can be bi-amped or Crites can fabricate networks. Bob has the network schematic, so you can roll your own, should you prefer. Bob M. of Ram Sound and JC speak highly of the 456. I purchased two pair, JW purchased two pair, two of my local buds are considering some for themselves. I believe Tim had 13 pair total, so there should be a few pair left for first-come. Tim also has a complete pair of MCM1900 with networks for $800. That's a deal!! He also has some MWM (2 woofers) for $100 and split MWM (1 woofer) for $50. I'm happy to answer any questions (within my knowledge set) and put those interested in touch with Tim, for those who may need his contact info. Let the shopping begin . . . . We may be able to arrange a pony express run from St Louis through KC, Wichita, Oklahoma City, to the DFW area if there is sufficient interest and a willingness to add a few bucks for gas like we did a few years ago for the pony express run from Nashville.

  16. I have a restored/re-capped Sansui AU-5900 amplifier for sale. The work was done in June of this year by a very good local tech. It sounds great and works flawlessly. Cosmetically the faceplate and knobs are in excellent condition. There are a few blemishes on the top and sides. It's rated at approx. 50 watts per channel and drives my Chorus II's very well. I'm only selling it due to being all in on a HH Scott 345 tube receiver. I would like $450 for it plus shipping and packing via FedEx ground. Local pick-up in Redding, CA is always welcome. I am willing to meet within a reasonable distance for the right deal. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask Thanks, Mark

  17. From the listing: "PAIR OF KLIPSCH CORNWALL LOUDSPEAKER. The Item is KLIPSCH CORNWALL-I produced in late 70’s. The condition is excellent. I have to move to small space so i can not go with this big speaker system. I bought this Arkansa from an old person who worked as an Engineer in Klipsch plant when Klipsch manufactured this system in Arkansa plant. He refreshed this vintage speaker system. I accept only local pick up."

  18. Selling off my office rig. Not a current model but one of my favorites. 3watts with 6l6gcs as is, 5watts with KT88s. Incredibly quite... like headphone amp quite :-0. 8ohm for headphones and 300ohm for headphones. 8ohm speaker outs with cards binding posts. Hate to see it sit unused on a shelf. 1200obo Justin 323-868-9722

  19. Of course... with a full Ruby needle Aida cartridge. Uni pivot was a bit of a nightmare. Hidden and suppressed musical spectrum, constant thinkering as the weather and humidity changed and inability to maintain a consistency to my liking... with and without oil in the cup. I'll never own another uni pivot.

  23. That's one way of looking at it. Alternatively, greater possibilities provide greater opportunity to learn about achieving results via option manipulation, along with comparatively superior results as lessons are learned, so long as the options actually provide for superiority (sometimes they don't - they're occasionally just differences with no clear-cut "winner").

  24. For those who care about such things, like me, here is the DC offset readings for both channels. The amp was on approx. 30 minutes before I took the readings. My multi-meter is not state of the art but pretty accurate compared to more sophisticated meters I have used. I would say the output stage is petty healthy, at least as far as DC leakage.

  25. Excellent, now you will know how much power you are NOT using. The lights don't even come on half the time with music with maybe a fraction of watt when they do.

  26. Update ... horns are 6.5x6.5x12 and driver is a 1 inch type, crossed at 2000Hz. Bit disappointed??

  27. it's not... in comparison to a folded horn design. until you hear it for yourself, you may not know what you are missing. I still have both the CW and the LS... the CW will never be my main speakers ever again. the CW is an excellent performer for its price point, but it's no La Scala or Klipschorn. as others have stated, either get a folded horn subwoofer or use a direct radiating subwoofer set to a very low cross over point and control the output... this is how you can get it to blend well with the LS.

  29. I have a flat pack available for $100 (way less than my cost for the lumber and what I spent to get it cut for me), but I refuse to ship it because of cost and hassle. It needs to be picked up. Then about $100-200 for a 12"driver (JBL or Eminence). Most times you will be using less than 5 watts in that tiny room and you have REAL low distortion sub-BASS!!

  30. I own 3 KLIPSCH systems. A 2-ch Ki-396 Master bedroom setup / a 6.2 downstairs RF7iii Theater setup / a 5.1 Klipsch Pro Jubilee Surround DVD-Audio setup , Theater upstairs. . Every single amp used in those rigs are Carver Pro ZR1600's , all bridged in Mono. So I'm using 18 of ZR1600's, and have 2 more as backups, 20 total ! Also for my Jubilee Sub duty's I use the mammoth Crown macro-tech 3600vz , run thru a Danley TH50. I used to have Tube amps, ...never satisfied...then I finally found an Pro Solid State amp that dominated in clarity / dynamics and power to boot ... everything I hadever ever wished for in a Pro amp. ...and Rack Mountable. (Pic below is the JUBILEE 5.1 amp rack, using 10 Carver ZR1600s bridged in Mono...to Bi-Amp all 5 Jubilees.)

  35. @ACV92 The seller says 4 12” speakers. What he means is 4 Heresy for $300. You should be in the car already. <-------If only this were true, unfortunately it isn’t. I've just now looked at this on the big screen. Stupid tiny iPad. They appear to be KG4s with three of the four having had the risers removed. $250 a pair restored, more like $100 pair in mediocre shape, if that much. Dang, I thought you had hit the jackpot. Sorry. That fourth speaker seems bigger than a KG4. Odd. Ask the seller to take pictures of “the place where the wires attach” on all four.. That would tell us what they are.

  36. That's all you need to drive a 30 AWG voice coil. But non technical people want to buy enought copper to jump start a locomotive with 300 amps of current. Speakers rarely see more than a few amps DYNAMICALLY, espeically horn loaded. I thing the MWM's were fused at 3 amps.

  37. Interesting how the sound of the speakers changes when the door is open, if the room is part empty, or when I park my car in the middle of the room. It has a nice balance to it when the door is shut and the car is inside. Fortunate, because that is the usual arrangement when I go out there and turn on the stereo for a quick listen.

  42. I recorded a tape once on my high $ Sony deck in stereo of this dude I knew. I bought the deck just to record him. The ONLY reel I ever cherished and held close to my heart. He did it just for me and now he's gone. I went back years later to listen to it for the third time and it was a total waste. No sticky tape. More like glued together. Heartbreaking to say the least.

  43. Just opened up the Otari and it has no doubt been serviced, VERY clean inside no dust nothing. My understanding is Bobby got this deck from Cigarbum when he liquidated his system. As memory serves it was mentioned. I had a Teac a few years ago as well as a pioneer 909 & 707 none sounded as good as this deck but I suspect that has to do with service and the recordings. 7.5 IPS radio station recordings (Recordings made for air by the station) are superb. Im not much on 80's pop but its fun to put on a tape and walk away for 2 hours and just see whats on there. Rather large assortment of music
